Post No. 440 - The Magical Battle of Melbourne, Australia and Humanity

By the way, for those who would like to contribute to this project by lighting on-line candles, I have created shrines over at the nshrine site

Some time ago, I reviewed  Dion Fortune's book "The Magical Battle of Britain". I'm now rereading that, and it is prompting some thought, which has crystallised a little after a dream last night.

First, let me "define" a few terms/concepts:
  • much as we are more than just a physical, we are also more than consciousness: we also have our unconscious (or subconscious, if you prefer: I understand shrinks also talk about preconscious), which I consider is likely to be those parts of our self that are our parallels or soul parts, our Higher Self, and so on and so forth [3];
  • there is a concept that we are all one: this is actually fairly complex, as we are also - at this level - also all truly individual and unique, but we share a string of connections to Higher Selves and ultimately to the Goddess: one of the ways that connectedness is realised on our level of reality is through what Jung refers to as "the collective unconscious"; another is through the mind and soul of various groups we are members of (see here [2] );
  • the group soul, which could arguably be considered to be akin to the unconscious of a group, and is more difficult to change;
  • group mind, which is more changeable, and equates more to the social mood of a group;
  • we can have an effect through non-physical means - i.e., through psychic means, which can be either beneficial or harmful (and I chose to interpret those terms as the BPF [1] do, in a spiritually mature manner).
What Dion Fortune describes is using psychic means to bring spiritual forces down from higher frequency levels of reality to the astral and etheric levels (or planes) of reality (or existence). The energy being channelled was aimed at giving those in Britain (not just the British) and her allies the strength of character, morale and spiritual backing necessary to resist and then defeat the evils of Nazi Germany.

Where I got to last night, Dion Fortune was discussing the effects of loss of morale in those nations invaded by Germany, and describes how it was determined that this was due to harmful psychic influences. It all brought to mind the evils of John Howard [2] playing up the fears of Australians, particularly around asylum seekers/refuges, in the 90s. that evil is something I am still working against, physically (letters to politicians, mostly) and non-physically - using techniques a little similar, in principle to What Dion Fortune and her group were doing (and see also here, and here).

Then we come to last night's dream, which was of working on the foundations of a massive building. As an engineer, I know that the foundations of a building can take as much effort as what is above the ground, and that's the sense I had. It explains (again, I'll admit) that I'm acting partly (our life's purpose is a manifold thing) to help do the behind-the-scenes changes that will lead to a better world down the track. (It also explains that I'm also helping to bring ideas from the astral into the physical, which can take a certain amount of effort to overcome the resistance of those who don't want change - and the masters of those people, in some cases [4]. I've  had half a dozen potentially patentable ideas, and have had to watch as others did patent them in a couple of cases. My frustration at that led me to "give up" and create a blog where I could post my ideas, but I don't have the time to keep up with what keeps coming through :) )

So ... what am I going to do now?

Well, I'm going to continue with all the other goals, such as writing ideas and concepts that I know others - possibly with more time and resources than I - are also working on, with my teaching and healing, with my personal development ... and I'm going to modify what I loosely call "my meditation work" to include projecting images to various group minds.

Now, when I started working with psychic matters, as a teenager back in the 70s (Goddess - I was a teenager last century!), I didn't know about visualisation, so I used to just will peace, love and joy to the world, as I did Lobsang Rampa's alternate nostril breathing exercises. It was actually great practice for me at developing the use of my will, but I was very relieved to find out how to use visualisation - it made what I was trying to do much easier. In exactly the same way, finding out how Dion Fortune's group used visualisation has given me a direction on how to improve work on changing group minds: use symbols.

Of course, I'm a pagan, not a Christian, as Dion Fortune effectively was, so I'm going to use the technique I am most familiar and comfortable with: runes - specifically, bind runes. I will create a bind rune for each purpose, then after I've done my colour breathing etc, I'll combine part of my breathing work with projecting these images to the various group minds I can work with.

In case any others would like to be part of this work (invoking Yesod can help, if you know how to work with the Qabbalah), I'll post the designs as I complete them on this post. They might even be part of the next batch of tattoos I get ... if I can work out where I'm going to fit them :)

To the group mind of all humanity:
self reliance (which is a marvellous source of growth and personal development, apart from being a brilliant manifestation of true spirituality), responsibility (which is also a nice practical and real application of spirituality - especially around the lessons of agape, compassion, which I decided not to include as so many others are focused on them ... albeit possibly in an immature way ... ) and maturity (my first design for this project, which has been subsequently revised; peace was also a strong contender ... see here, for instance)

To the group mind of all Australians:
perspicacity, self discipline (too much focusing on partying and being drunk here - see this post, for instance) and welcoming (which is to overcome our xenophobia and racism, although anything which would counter the fear that Howard engendered would be useful; see also here)

To the group mind of all Melbournites / Sydneyites:
spirituality, slowing (I think cities are too crowded for wellbeing, and the pace of our life is, in general excessive - see, for instance, here, and here, here) and civility (which is partly inspired by the problems I encounter when travelling on the roads, especially at this time of the year - see, for instance, here)

PS - I stopped reading Dion Fortune's book when she started rabbiting on about how the struggle was between nice Christianity and nasty paganism. What utter rubbish.

PPS - my next Group Mind and bindrune project is about the Australian Parliaments, based on the use of the following - more to come :)

[3] This also could lead into another topic we were discussing in the development group I am a sitter in: projections from people who are incarnate, such as perhaps former family members who have subsequently reincarnated yet still come back to greet former family members who pass over. How?
    Confused? Let me explain :)
    Let's say person A dies in 1985, and is reincarnated in 1995. In 2010, person B, who was related to A in A's former incarnation that ended in 1985, dies. Person A can still appear to Person B in the image they had when they were Person A. This can occur as:

  • the astral is very malleable, and basically follows our thought, so people tend to appear as they wish to (or, if they forget to think of clothes, without clothes - and hence the uncomfortable dreams some have when they forget to think of being clothed while in the astral :) Others aren't bothered by such trivialities). Thus, the astral of Person separates -or, more accurately, likely, part of the astral of Person A separates - from where Person A's physical body is, perhaps at the request of a BPF Guide, and travels to where Person B is dying. Thinking of the life in which Person A knew person B, Person A will resume the image by which Person B knew them.
  • this is termed bilocation, and can be done consciously (it is a part of the Wiccan training I had, which began with "exteriorisation of the chakras"). Ever feel distracted, or wonder what happens when you're day dreaming? One answer is (that it could be) bilocation (there are other possibilities). This is something that grounding, or more properly, centering and grounding, aims to get under control when it is not deliberate - which is often known by the term "doppelganger", although that may also involve a degree of manifestation [2]
     (I'll also thank my Cariad for giving me the example to express all that *mwa )

[4] Look up the topic "control" on this blog - for instance, here, here and here. And maybe here, and here, here, here, here, here, and here, which are all relevant to this post anyway.

[2] Please see my post "The Death of Wikipedia" for the reasons I now recommend caution when using Wikipedia. I'm also exploring use of h2g2, although that doesn't appear to be as extensive (h2g2 is intended - rather engagingly - to be the Earth edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy").

Post No. 439 - Blessed Mabon, doing a Nero, and peace homework

Yesterday I had a work trip to northern Tasmania - a quick trip, down and back in a day, albeit a long day. While I was there, it was interesting that one of the people I was working with joked that, there, the rain started on around the 21st March, and continued until November.

The rain starts on Mabon ...

Well, it certainly had yesterday, and the scenery reminded my of other similar scenes which, I think, date back to when I was one of the Vikings who invaded Ireland and established Dublin. (It moved me to the extent of writing a poem, actually - and I got another one about the view across a stormy, rain Bass Strait on the small plane coming back.)

It was a lovely way to spend Mabon, which, for me, marks the start of the winding down time of the year. I'd love to be able to stop working around now each time of the year for an extended break from my day job (there's lots of other stuff I'd do), but I'm not likely to ever be that rich :)

Anyway, may your Mabon be blessed.

Moving on to other matters, I've been doing a Nero ...

... that is, I've been fiddling ... with the quotations in the "provocative quotations section" of my signature block on this blog.

In particular, I have restored one about Armageddon, and modified it a little.

I have added the TSA grope fest euphemistically referred to as "enhanced pat downs" as an example of the indolence typifying one side of Armageddon. This behaviour is creating an entire generation (think of what young kids and babies have to endure as part of this!) for whom sexual assault has been normalised, and is warping the nominal aim of safety (remember the saying about the cure being worse than the disease?) - which leads to my other addition to this quotation: the means shapes the end, which is from Marion Zimmer Bradley's book "Heartlight" (which I have now ordered a copy of).

I am realising now that this saying (the means shapes the end) is so very true. It is possibly also a very good defence against fundamentalism / extremism / "playground-one-better-than-you" attitudes ("Think that's a knife? THIS is a knife!" ... Think that's security? THIS is security!" ... "Think that's serious about paganism? THIS is serious about paganism!") I'll keep working on how to use that as exactly such a defence.

"Heartlight" has some interesting takes on this, and through the lead character's thoughts, there is some interesting reflection on the whole topic of extremism and what MZB seems to view as police brutality.

So where did all this "police brutality" start? Was it with the 60s, where the young had a confrontational and thus ARGUABLY inherently violent attitude? Lack of life experience in my experience is what leads to the view that street marches and the like will change anything (as a child, I recall my mother taking me to the city [Melbourne's CBD, that is], and how terrifying the anti-Vietnam marchers were - they seemed so angry, verging on being violent themselves to my child's perceptions ... and maybe I was more correct than I knew). Now, there most unquestionably IS a time and place for them (e.g. the Arab Spring .. although even that has started to be warped into something less desirable), but mostly these are a case of people with limited life experience getting impatient and using the wrong means. If I and others I was working with had taken that approach when lobbying for trans rights in the 90s, we would have got nowhere. Even putting flowers in rifles seems good to those doing it, but risks reinforcing the perceptions of naivety on the part of the recipient.

I suspect communication may be the key, here ...

On that, I found out that "collaborative communication" - aka "non-violent" communication originated at that time. It is good - very good - but, as I've written elsewhere, it also has flaws.

Now, let's move our communication on to the topic of ... homework for those who want peace.

There may be a war between China and Japan over the Senkakus / Diaoyu Islands. This has recently been written about by Hugh White - in The age, of course :) - from an Australian point of view, i.e., if war comes, do we support our largest trading partner (China), or our main ally (the US, who support Japan)?

So ... what is to be done?

First off, don't assume war is going to happen because people want to kill people: that applies in some small scale conflicts (particularly the conflict in Syria, which has devolved into that nastiest of all wars, a "Civil" war), but it hasn't been a big motivation for a few centuries in many parts of the world (not since ... of, the days of knights and the concept of glory on battlefields ... oh wait, that was part of the advertising for the First World War ... ).

Think about what could be driving the main players.
  • The Chinese want to feel powerful and respected on the world stage, and maybe get even with Japanese for their invasion of China before and during WW2 (since around 1933, so it was was well underway when European WW2 got going in earnest).

  • The US want to keep their current feeling (irrespective of whether or not you consider they have or deserve it) of being powerful and feared (... maybe "respected")
  • The Japanese ... maybe they want to keep face?

OK, what does one do about this?

The long term view is to get past the whole "nations mean anything but a convenient means of governance" crap, and think of humanity first. Very noble, very necessary, but if one tries to push that seriously, it won't work in terms of preventing this imminent conflict because it takes too long, and requires too much fundamental change. So working now for the highest of all possible aims would be an approach that results in war now. Nevertheless, don't forget it - keep working on it, but in the background, and knowing that it is about preventing future war.This is the flower in the end of a gun barrel approach.

Let's suggest a few shorter term views that, if promoted, might be achievable in enough time:
- the Chinese have enormous patience, based on a very long history (I recall reading a view somewhere that the last few centuries can be summed as, from the Chinese perspective, just a couple of bad centuries in millenia of - mostly - being powerful), so they can afford to wait until their enemy (the USA) destroys itself from within,and thus win without having to take the field, which Sun Tzu, if I recall, says is the smarter way to win a war;
- the USA has democracy, and needs to start demonstrating this by debating internally the possibility of accepting others with power on world stage, and become more MATURE in their approach to this (and this is an achievable aim largely because of the coherent peace movements and history of robust debate that their democracy has);
- the Japanese are in the middle here: they would be the trigger to conflict between others, and have everything to lose, and nothing much to gain. They have been reluctant to take full responsibility for WW2 and the earlier invasions in order - I think - to save face (is a very, very, VERY big issues in Asia - I've worked there, and it is culturally ubiquitous). Nevertheless, the issue is either lose face over the islands or have the calamity of a war. Sadly, a war could be good for the Japanese economy, and the issue may come down to who would be better - the USA or China, in a military conflict. Both have improved since they last met in the Korean war. I suspect more improvement in the US military than the Chinese, but the will to fight of US populace is perhaps less, so in a conflict Japan would have to expect to wind up at negotiation table at some stage and thus lose islands - and, if the Malvinas / Falkland Islands can be any guide, eventually even the people there would want to stay part of China. It is probably unlikely that China would seek to invade Japan itself, as the backlash would be severe and would undermine what they're trying to do (changes their image from power to bully), so, perhaps Japan needs to focus on choosing the "least bad" of both options, and go to the international court and make protesting noises, but not get into a military confrontation.

Post No. 438 - A late Lammas

Well, officially Lammas was a few weeks ago: the reality here at our home is that, because I planted later last year than I should, we've only just started getting our first annual harvest from our garden (a couple of cobs of smaller than normal corn - I find corn one of the easiest crops to grow .. but here in the city, doing it as a hobby, I have a few advantages that farmers don't necessarily have - such as access to plenty of water). When I get the time, I have some mint and an olive tree that we bought recently to re-pot, but time has been at a premium, of late, and still will be today and until next weekend ...

Here's a few reading links for your consideration:
PS - if you don't understand why I am writing about Lammas now, you need to read up on the Southern Hemisphere [2] and broaden your perspective on life and understanding of reality.

PS - our bulbs, mint and rosemary are in flower, and we have 7 sunflowers greeting us and the sun each day ... the sycamores I'm growing in pots (mostly as presents) from seeds I harvested are doing well: it's a good time in our garden just now.
