Post No. 487 - Reflections and formulae

Well, my day job has dragged me - kicking and screaming all the way - into the late 20th Century by joining Linked In (in my day job persona - you won't find Gnwmythr there!). Once there, have seen some surprisingly good material (socially progressive and inclusive). On other hand, I have also often seen people following or advocating following a simplistic and possibly inappropriate formula, particularly around leadership. The exceptions to this are a breath of fresh air - which, incidentally, I found Barbara Sher's [2] book "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" (paperback 322 pages, Dell, ISBN-10: 0440505003, ISBN-13: 978-0440505006) to be, especially in not calling problems 'challenges', allowing oneself to not be constantly 'up' (one of the reasons I let myself grumpy on this blog!) and in identifying and managing influences as they are, not as they are supposed to be.

Following formulae can be quite a problem. I've seen, for instance, several groups and many businesses where leaders are obviously feeling that they're at the point where they need to demonstrate that they can be' tough', and 'make the hard calls'. All of which assumes that there are no collaborative, gentle or alternative ways to handle problems, and thus potentially alienates and injures people for no good reason (compare the economic and social benefits of the Australian response to the GFC to the draconian measures used overseas - and I am aware of the flawed, dangerous implementation of Rudd's plans).

Incidentally, that sort of behaviour is often justified on the basis of financial or economic matters (for small scale and society-scale actions respectively). Sometimes such actions are needed (think of balancing a household budget, for instance), but sometimes they're just implementation of philosophical blindness [4] [5].

Watching for such behaviour is one of the things I've learned slowly and painfully in this life (and on that, incidentally, I consider Campbell Newman a perfect example of the reason some engineers should never be put in charge of other human beings [3] ), as is insisting on groups I join having adequate anti-discrimination policies (for me, around women, and LGBTI issues: the failure of one particular world movement on this issue is why I am not even mentioning it, despite the ostensibly noble aims of the group), backed by REALISTIC implementation - education, compulsory for everyone.

It probably seems like a bit of overkill, perhaps, for small, informal or social groups, but I'm basically tired of copping the flak from other people's slackness and ignorance (or, worse, stupidity or hypocrisy). If I have to, for instance, start going into my personal medical history in order to receive basic politeness, then I'm not interested in being there.

All of this is why I want the Rangers of the Inner Plane to be different: inclusivity of LGBTI people and all women is expected as a given before being allowed to join, and things like expected time frames are out. I'm doing some work on an online training course, and that will hopefully help me get the Ranger materials up and running within a decade or so :)

My main life tasks, however, still involve quite a considerable amount of doing, rather than focusing on teaching, and I may be posting less here in order to focus more on my clearing and rescue work -which I am now in a position to do because of some recent (and potentially imminent) changes.

[5] On that, as with many other people, I have accepted the proscription on using psychic ability for self gain (I suppose that should be, excessive self gain, or unreasonable self gain? After all, I do charge for some of this ... but I certainly don't try to get the winning lottery numbers, for instance) or proof, but I recently viewed 'the economy' as an energy construct, and found negative balls of goo stuck in it, doing things like stopping decisions around spending money on infrastructure, so I have started clearing those. I now view 'the economy' as one of the energy constructs of society that needs to be healed and cleared - in other words, it is not just a case of working on people who make decisions, etc.

[4] I've often speculated about psychological factors in some public decisions - for instance, what part did the second Bush's desire to please his father lead to the second invasion of Iraq? How much of Thatcher's hardline militarism was really based on a desire to please her father? Until we free ourselves from ALL such influences, we are children - immature, as we are incapable of genuinely taking steps on our own feet, unable to make decisions for ourselves as we're influenced by the unacknowledged or hidden.

[3] I occasionally read the online comic strip Dilbert, and some of it is genuinely funny - particularly for me, as I also work as an engineer (although not electrical), some ironic, some sarcastic (which I do not count as humour - just another attempt to control others), and some is a perfect example of why engineers should not be managers. Engineers are potentially very, very good at engineering - although some financial and political pressures over the last few decades can make that almost impossible, at times. As an example of that, I love watching the film "Apollo 13" for a range of reasons, one of which is the clear, engineering type thinking - science would often be useless at making changes to our lives without the input of engineers. Science is not engineering, and vice versa: there is a valid role and place for both, but both need oversight. As mentioned at the start of the film "Flash of Genius", when the lead character is lecturing a new intake of engineers on ethics, engineers designed the gas chambers in Nazi Germany, as well as - if I recall correctly - the artificial heart. Science gave us improved medicine and the atomic bomb. Both can be great servants, but both can be a nightmare if not subject to some scrutiny.

[2] Please see here and my post "The Death of Wikipedia" for the reasons I now recommend caution when using Wikipedia. I'm also exploring use of h2g2, although that doesn't appear to be as extensive (h2g2 is intended - rather engagingly - to be the Earth edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")

My "blogiography" (list of all posts - currently not up to date) is here.

I started this blog to cover karmic regression-rescue (see here and here), and it grew ...  See here for my group mind project, here and here for my "pagans for peace" project (and join me at 9 PM on Sunday, wherever you are, to meditate for peace), and here for my bindrune kit-bag.
  • One size does NOT fit all.
  • Occam's Razor only works if  the simplest solution is actually recognised as being the simplest, rather than the one that best fits one's bigotries being labelled 'simplest'.
  • May the world of commerce and business be recognised to be a servant, not a master, of the lives of people.
  • Ban the dream interpretation industry!

  • "Following the crowd" is not "going with the flow".
  • Armageddon is alive and well and happening right now: it is a battle between the indolence of "I only ..." and/or "I just ..." and/or "Everyone knows ... " and/or "they can ..." and what Bruce Schneier [2] calls "security theatre" on one side, and perspicacity and the understanding that the means shape the end on the other. Indolence vs. perspicacity, and expediency vs. honour.

  • My favourite action movie of all time is "Gandhi". However, I loathe the stereotypical action movie - and, for similar reasons, I loathe many dramas, which are often emotionally violent, more so in some cases than many war films.
Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger [people]. JOHN F. KENNEDY (quoting 19th century Episcopal Bishop Phillips Brooks)
Jesus loves you.  Odin wants you to grow up. (Facebook meme, according to John Beckett)

Females, get over 'cute'. Get competent. Get trained. Get capable. Get over 'cute'. And those of you who are called Patty and Debby and Suzy, get over that. Because we use those names to infantalise females – we keep females in their 'little girl' state by the names we use for them. Get over it. If you want to be taken seriously, get serious. Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Those whom we cannot stand are usually those who we cannot understand P.K.SHAW

Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, and the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change." SENATOR ROBERT F. KENNEDY (US Attorney General 1966 Speech)
Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product ... if we should judge America by that -- counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. ... Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile." ROBERT F. KENNEDY 1968
