Post No. 915 - defensive bindrunes: The Sentinel

Recently, I started thinking about bindrunes which could be used as defence against psychic attack. In my usual fashion, I started thinking about this in terms of creating bindrunes for words - "words of power", in a sense.

My first word was around making sure the psychic attack didn't affect me - which is not about the protection aspect, as such, but about making sure one stayed oneself, and one of the key aims of psychic attack if generally to make one "not oneself", whether that is through illness, exhaustion, or direct attempts at control, or some other effect. I tossed around a few words, and the one which I eventually settled on was mӕgan,which I've posted about elsewhere, and was about maintaining one's core.

I then started to think about a word to protect oneself in a BPM manner - i.e., in a way that wouldn't cause collateral damage (e.g., by reflecting the energy without direction, or allowing it through oneself to continue on its merry way until it hits someone else), or by sending it back to the originator in a way that is malicious or vengeful, rather than dispassionate (and, as there is often a karmic origin to such psychic attack, bouncing it back in anger, hate, fear, rage or vengeance is only going to PROLONG the lesson, possibly to future lifetimes). I was considering a combination of "reflection" and "conscience" / "perspective", or possibly grounding, when I mentioned this to my friend RMftB (Rune Master from the Bush - also known as Tony in his day job and any other time he is hiding his runic super-power :) ).

RMftB did some thinking about this, and came up with a wonderful idea based on a combination of runes selected on the basis of their characteristics. RMftB came up with a combination of, at the simplest level, Othala, Mannaz / Mann, Laguz / Lagu, and Gar arranged into a stylised warrior with shield and weapon (the weapon started as a sword, but wound up looking more like an axe to me). After a bit of tweaking, this look like this:
With a very brief bit of discussion, we agreed this figure was a sentinel, and thus are referring to it as "The Sentinel".

Having done that, RMftB also started identifying the hidden runes, and developed this commentary to identify those and the relevant aspects of the included runes:

In the meantime, I got going with my colouring, and the final bindrune looks like this:

The weapon, represented by Lagu / Laguz, was selected with the thought of allowing energy to flow around or past: the col,our blue also has associations of flow, which helps that aspect, but any application of a "weapon" - or even defensive techniques - must be based on wisdom (to prevent collateral damage etc), and thus orange for wisdom has been added.

The body and legs are green for healing and grounding; the head is blue, for clear thought, and purple for (spiritual) insight; and the shield is purple for protection, with a dash of red for energy.

To use this, I would print it out and place it around my home, or carry it on me (e.g., in my purse), or draw the basic figure on myself using some sort of pen I am not allergic to, and easily removed in the event I find myself having an adverse reaction to it.

The design needs to be charged and activated: a good portion of this is done simply by doing the actions of printing, placing / drawing / etc with the INTENTION that it have the effect of being for protection of ... (insert name / description) , but that is also helped my doing an intentional ritual. An example of that could be adapting one of my New Moon rituals (e.g., here) by replacing the core with visualisation of energy flowing into The Sentinel, and asking BPM forces to charge and activate it. Another example would be to use my adaptation of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram to invoke a suitable Sephirah - perhaps Kether (for spiritual perspective above all else), Chockmah (for wisdom), Hod (for magick), Yesod (for work on the subconscious level), Chesed (for an emphasis on compassion), or Geburah (for an emphasis on fierce defence), or Tipereth (for an emphasis on staying balanced); which one is selected depends on the context and the type of attack.

When finished with the ritual, don't forget to close oneself down, close the circle, and ground and release all excess energy. The closing prayer I typically use for this is:
We ask that our auras be cleansed, cleared and closed. We ask that we be assisted to close down and to centre ourselves, grounding and releasing all excess energy whilst doing so. We ask that the pyramid be cleansed and cleared in all times, dimensions, realities, levels and spaces. We ask that all positive links, skills, outcomes and other things be strengthened. We ask that the circle be cleansed, cleared and closed, but that the protection, healing and guidance continue for the Highest Spiritual Good.

So mote it be.
(My usual routine protection prayer is in my signature block.)

I apologise for publishing these posts twice, but Blogger keeps changing my formatting. I can either publish it and then correct it, or save and close the post and correct it when I reopen it, but that leaves an extra copy in my "drafts" folder ...

Post No. 900 - Book Review: “Psychic Self-Defence”, by Dion Fortune

Dion Fortune was definitely a product of her time – her language and approach was very pre-1960s counter-cultural revolution, and thus may seem a little archaic to us, but she has some very good points in her book “Psychic Self-Defence: A Study in Occult Pathology and Criminality” (my copy: The Aquarian Press, 1988, ISBN 0-85030-766-X).
Probably two of the main ones for me are:
  • that psychic attack can be “accidental”, or unintentional, and occur for reasons that are not malicious;
  • that the field of psychism attracts, at times, some unstable people, and thus it is necessary to check whether a psychic attack is real (objective) or the outcome of fantasy or internal flaws (e.g., attention seeking, or subjective). This is actually one of the aims of the “Divine Light test” that I was taught, but consideration of this can go further, if you are assessing whether someone else is experiencing psychic attack or … something else.
Ms Fortune’s path is not Wicca, Paganism, New Age, or any of the other post-60s paths: it is Western Mystery Tradition, and, as such, includes, for instance:
  • a differentiation between Right Hand Path (“good”) and Left Hand Path (“not good”) – see here for more on this. Although this is much better than allocating colours (which has shades of racism), I prefer my descriptions of BPM for “good” and nonBPM for “not good” – or, at the very least, balanced positive (“good”) vs unbalanced (“not good”); and
  • very fixed ideas about how Reality was and Spiritual Development should be. Some of those ideas – e.g., service, are, in my opinion, good – or, at the very least, worth some genuine reflection.
I have points of agreement and disagreement with the content of this book.
For instance, I dispute Ms Fortune’s statement that one needs to identify the method and/or source of a psychic attack before being able to defend against it – that’s a bit like claiming one has to know what caused a hole in a leaking ship before fixing it: in many cases, you don’t need to know that, you just need to plug it. However, to continue with the analogy, there are some times when you need to know what caused said leak – for instance, if that was caused by the first outlying part of a reef, you also need to change course … or, perhaps a better analogy, if the leak has a very high pressure behind it, you need a plug that will resist high pressure, rather than just normal hull depth pressures.
It seems to me that the “need” for knowledge of details is something that is strongly emphasised in older western mystery traditions: I suspect that could be based on their view that energetic effects / magick is actually caused by various classes of spirit, and thus one needs to know what spirit to conjure in order to defeat the threat. My view, on the other hand, is that if one simply looks at the energy at hand (or, if one cannot do that, the effect the energy is having), one can deal directly with that, irrespective of the source. (This is probably a bit like the best way to defeat the “little green men” type of threat that the Russians used in Crimea and eastern Ukraine: historically similar events show that it is best to go flat out against the little green men without worrying about where they came from, or who is behind them.)
As a digression from what is in this book, I also dispute that one needs spirits to do magick: humans are quite capable of doing that, which is perhaps what the century of phenomena-based (also called physical) mediumship from mid-19th to mid-20th century was all about – demonstrating human potential.
I consider there was probably too much emphasis on telepathy and hypnosis when the author is considering psychic attack (psychic energy potentially can have a direct effect), although many modern approaches to the topic fail to consider this aspect adequately (see also control). I flat out disagree with the description of what happens at death (i.e., that there is some sort of split of consciousness - my term).
I found Ms Fortune’s reference to “occult police” an interesting idea, one that I will explore through meditation, as it has similarities to what I’ve seen done by BPM  Guides, people’s Higher Selves, and various hierarchies and Deities, and I want to satisfy myself as to whether there is an actual group identifiable as such, or whether that is the net impression created by the list I just gave.
On the other hand, I found the tendency to use “pathologies” (e.g., “The Pathology of Non-Human Contact”) unhelpful, and consider that reflects (a) the poor communication of what was considered to be “scientific” at that time – particularly psychology as it was then (and as it tends to still be, at times), and (b) the harshly judgemental and confining nature of the society Ms Fortune had the misfortune to live in.
In fact, one of the reasons I recommend reading this book is because it helps to give an insight into those times. On the other hand, in modern times there is, perhaps, too strong a tendency to overlook flaws of character as being acceptable on the basis of being inherent to a person (or, perhaps, confusing inherent worth, value and characteristics), whereas they should perhaps be changed.
The view on witchcraft is also narrow and focused on one set of behaviours that neochristians and superstitious folklorists have chosen, over the last couple of millennia, to label as witchcraft is such a way that the word has become an epithet (in the nasty sense of that word’s meanings). I am a witch, and proud of the good that I do.
I quibble with the differentiation between thought form and “artificial elemental”, as I consider the latter, as described in this book (which has NOTHING to do with the magickal elements or Nature Spirits) are a subset of the former. On the other hand, I agree with the comments about “residual psychic energy”.
The discussion on good and evil, whilst very neochristian in its formation, has an interesting discernment between “negative evil”, described as the Newtonian (Third law) reaction to the force of “good”, and encompasses the beneficial Principle of Destruction / Scavenger of the Gods (I wonder how that compares to Atropos?), and “positive evil”, which ranges from chaos ( * SIGHS * ) to “the Qlippoth”.
There are also some common sense comments about risk, non-psychic dangers of some groups (e.g., financial), and the connection between psychism and mental illness in SOME people (the terminology reflects the very young state of psychology, and the harsh judgementalism of the Victorian Era in the United Kingdom).
There is a northern hemispheric bias at times as well, as the author fails to realise that the Sun moves counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
The description of psychic attack methods is reasonable, but, in my experience, it is a combination of uncontrolled projected emotion (e.g., hate or rage – often from jealousy or envy or resentment) and an aura that has not been closed (or not adequately closed) that results in the overwhelming majority of psychic attack – not malicious misuse of telepathy or talismans, etc.
In terms of defence against psychic attack, I agree with continuing top use conventional, everyday, garden-variety doctors, but then I would describe the techniques to be use as (a) the psychic fundamentals (see my signature block below), and (b) clearing, including rescue, IF it is needed. The methods described by Ms Fortune are reasonable (except that I do not necessarily hold with the half-day renewal requirement – it may be less, or longer, so I CHECK), but if they cause discomfort in the person who is seeking defence, other methods should be found, lest the discomfort undo the work.
And that last phrase tells me I’ve done enough on this review :)
You can find other reviews on Amazon, in Spiral Nature magazine, on Reality Sandwich (which goes beyond this book to look at other sources), and on Good Reads (I’m not a member, so I’m trusting the reviews are worthwhile)
Oh, and Ms Fortune completely fails to mention indirect psychic attack ...

Post No. 888 - Book Review: “Thorson’s Way of Psychic Protection”, by Judy Hall

This post is a transcript of some notes I found recently that I made a couple of years ago for a review of the book “Way of Psychic Protection”, by Judy Hall (“astrologer and karmic counsellor”), pub. Thorsons, London, 1999, ISBN 0-00-711021-9. This was planned for a review of library books when I was a librarian at a spiritualist place: I’m no longer a member, and thus do not have access to the book to check points in my notes. That,. unfortunately, makes the review a little … “uneven”, in places.
*****
This book has a good, easy to follow layout – almost a “Dummies Guide to Psychic Protection”.
The definitions include a few unusual ones, but the definition of “psychic protection” is particularly good.
The unusual definitions include:
“psychic hoover”: someone who absorbs , and is harmed by, energy, emotions, feelings and impressions from another person or place.
(I would tend to simply say the person is ungrounded and/or open. but that lacks the elegance and impact of the above.)
“psychic attachment”: another person or being, alive or dead, adversely influencing someone through an auric attachment. Objects can also be the subject of psychic attachment. Thought forms can attach psychically to people or objects.
(I describe these as links, objects, earthbound entities [attached], etc.)
Other unusual definitions include “dustbin dimension”, and “emotional overwhelm” – although that last one is probably close to “Highly Sensitive Person”.
Note that both of us, the author of this book and I, could be accused of using jargon. We could also be acknowledged as using precise, technical terms that facilitate clear communication.
OK, so, moving on.
The author provides a range of techniques, with a view to you finding the ones that work for you – an approach I heartily endorse. The techniques include crystals and plant/flower essences (including the possibility of changes of smell if negative energy has been absorbed), activities to increase endorphins (e.g., if overwhelmed by others’ pain, with activities such as meditation, jogging, exercise and [presumably good] sex), activities to increase serotonin (negative ions, melatonin [apparently not legal in England], bananas).
The key tools promoted in the book are relaxation and visualisation.
One thing I would like to see addressed is that of disharmonious energy.
Ms Hall gives some history, including (alleged) past battles between Egyptian and Ethiopian magicians – there are some good connections with Ancient Egyptian mythology (the popular and widely respected [in my experience] author Christian  Jacq is mentioned), although I disagree with the author’s opinion that the ka is the etheric (p. 32; I consider the ka is more like the astral). I was interested in Bast as a means to connect with one’s Higher Self.
I particularly agree with the comments on drugs (they can blow the crown chakra wide open, and lead to “bad trips” which are negative psychic experiences – and alcohol is included in this area), the problem of lack of awareness of personal space / aura, and the potential benefits of having a personal journal. On that, just after I began my serious psychic work, back in the early 80s, I had one evening where I drank more than I should, and wound up experiencing very considerable psychic attack. If I didn’t know how to protect myself, I would have been in trouble. Ever since then, I have only ever drunk very small amounts of alcohol, and very infrequently.
There is an interesting discussion on healing auric damage by “hands on” healing – i.e., what I term channelled energy healing.
A few other notes I made as I read this book are:
  • p. 26: “Blame can keep people attached to their problems rather than release them.” At the time, I noted “this is, possibly, akin to Gandhi’s saying Do you fight to change things, or to punish?”, but I now consider that to be off the mark: the comment is simply noting that one can bind oneself to something energetically, and that energy can be dislike/hate/fear as much as something positive;
  • p. 37: as I read this page, I realised I need to do a definition – with diagram, of which there are plenty of good ones in this book – on “align” – e.g., “align the aura” means having all the levels of one’s aura nestle together like a Russian Matryoshka or “nesting” doll;
  • there is a good discussion on non-physical sex – including psychic rape, and things that can lead to a similar effect (e.g., and undue desire to maintain [“protect’] a daughter’s virginity, or suppressed incestuous desires). (Digression: the Essenes apparently ate fish because they wrongly thought fish reproduced asexually, and they – also wrongly - saw sex as unclean and associated with the material world: it would have been a shock when they got to the astral and found sex happening there as well!);
  • the Earth Star / Earth chakra is included in a chakra system which includes nine above the crown (I know and work with 3, and also know that there are, indeed, many more). Comments are given (p. 47) about a mineral which open the heart chakra, and that if lower chakras are “stuck” open, they can get attachment of lower astral entities; if higher chakras are stuck open, the risk if of attachment of astral entities. I’m wary of these comments to an extent, as the chakras are functioning all the time – as is the aura, but there are degrees of open/close while functioning, and if something is too open, yes problems can occur, but some problems can also occur if people try to close them too much, or to stop them from functioning at all;
  • there can be apparent psychic attack which is an outcome of holding on to outgrown / outworn concepts – possibly unknowingly. Interesting idea, to which I would add the possibility of a soul part / parallel having conflicting beliefs;
  • the author acknowledges “what some people would call demonic beings”. Unfortunately, I should have made a better note while I still had the book out on loan from the library … ;
  • good chakra exercises including using a pendulum, clearing links, cleansing an d grounding;
  • can have everyday life vulnerabilities as a result of “giving too much of oneself away”, so watch boundaries, be assertive, check are grounded, manage negative expectations;
  • sleep issues mentioned include residual energies in hotel rooms (which is why I cleanse such rooms when I have to stay in them);
  • protection of cars by pentagrams is included (I use a mixture of runes and Egyptian hieroglyphs), as is workplaces – with suggestions taking into account the possibility of being thought “weird” affecting oneself – and computers (which is one of the few parts of the book that I considered a bit strange / weird / mumbo-jumbo-ish);
  • p. 94 has  story I’ve either written about on this blog, or told others about, or both, of when the author went to a café and created light / positive energy about herself, only to have a nearby customer move out of that energy back into less balanced / more negative energy;
  • Soul Retrieval is included, which is defined as regaining a part of the Soul / spiritual energy which has been detached as a result of trauma, strong emotion, etc – whether in a past or the present life;
  • common sense checks on channelling (e.g., being ware of astral tricksters) are included, as is advice to think oneself back into the body if one finds oneself outside;
  • good exercise on cleansing and dispersing energies, and comments on the problems of disharmony in groups;
  • on p. 129 the author cites George Ritchie, in “Return from Tomorrow”, seeing ghosts in bars who were experiencing having a drink through the living – a problem I’ve written about, as have many others, and which brings to mind the concept of (harmful) “Hungry Ghosts”;
  • good description on pp. 131 – 132 of helping a man who had been a Jesuit who was haunted by that past life in his current life, through what was akin to a karmic clearing, as I wrote about here and here;
  • good comments about thought forms: “We create thought forms every day. When we have strong desires, we create what we want on the mental level. When we hate, or if we are resentful or jealous, we also create a thought form. Thought forms feed off strong emotional energy. It is that thought form that can attack someone against whom we have a grudge – even if we do not consciously wish it.” An excellent and, on the basis of my experience, very accurate comment. However, I’m wary of focusing on a “thought form police officer” approach – that can help in the short term, but at some stage one has to do one’s shadow work and face the issue leading to that dislike etc;
  • excellent comments about using “voice dialogue” (“a technique where a person (or therapist) intuitively speaks to, and answers for, a psychic attachment or spirit”) with attachments – it’s like rescue / clearing, but has a broader application. Such attachments can be “inner figures”, or aspects of oneself – and the best defence is “know thyself”;
  • psychic attack is covered in Chapter Ten, with a “love conquers all” type approach (which I qualify with “not always”) and a good description of the potential symptoms;
  • a resources listing is provided, but it has a mostly US and UK focus, although two Australian bush flower remedies are included.
In short, buy this book – as I will when I get enough money.

Post No. 529 - Some thoughts from watching a magical film series

PS - since the author of this series of books has become a notorious transphobe, I do not endorse her and her output in any way, shape or form, and wish to distance myself from her and her output. I will edit these over time, and will likely remove all references.

I’ve been watching the <magical film series> , and I have to say … wizards and witches in that Universe suck at combat. But then again, so do many who serve the Light in this world as well.

That’s not to say none have courage, skill and tenacity, the sort of individual attributes smiled upon by Valkyrja and The Morrigan (who appears to have claimed me, making her a Patron Deity of mine, according to accepted understanding – which always seems crazy to me, as I’m a servant to my Patron Deities, not the other way round), but their understanding of psychic combat is as limited as … a child coming up against the power and organisation of, say, the USA’s armed forces – and, no matter what you may think of their involvement in wars since the Second World War, they are a powerful military force, and, although it may take time, they generally do learn the lessons of their failures in combat (none of which lessons are necessarily lessons in ethics, and have nothing to do with the politics of being in that particular combat situation; I don't know if they give lessons in determining which orders are lawful or not, which I understand the Aussie military does).

Now, in case you think this is all meaningless rubbish, probably the most common situation that I need such skills is when dealing with an uncooperative [3]. This is someone who is maliciously, knowingly using their situation as an earthbound entity to gain power at the expense of others – and possibly to actively harm others. They may well be doing so out of some personal injury they received, and they unquestionably need help, but the overriding concern with such people is stopping them doing more harm to others (they’ve usually, in my experience, gone long past harming the people who injured or wronged them, and now are lashing out at anyone with a minor similarity to those people, or who are simply in the vicinity – which is a theme explored by the story “The Jackal”, by Vera Nazarian in the Marion Zimmer Bradley edited “Darkover”  anthology, “Four Moons of Darkover”).

As an example, consider the defences set up at the start of the battle: a truly impressive dome, created using spells that I have (partly) adopted in real life. In real life, some people forget to make sure that the defences cover above and below, mostly during their less experienced periods of life when they are still learning.

How could that be improved?

Well, military thinking for small forces engaged in combat (and I am simplifying dreadfully here, so apologies to anyone reading who has military training - I haven't, by the way, just read a lot and have rellies who have served in the military) is to always make sure your rear is defended – in other words, someone is watching to see if an attack could come from somewhere unexpected. The aim is also to have a force in reserve, able to be committed to areas of defence that need

What is the psychic equivalent of that? Looking at frequencies higher and lower than that you’re working on.

In a real life rescue of an uncooperative (and the aim is to rescue them, but after the harm they’re doing is stopped, and their victims are receiving healing), my ideal would be to have at least three people doing nothing connected with the rescue, but only continuously working at maintaining psychic defences around those doing the actual rescue work: one focused on the realm that the others are being worked on, one focused on frequencies that are lower than that realm (thus aiming to prevent a psychic attack coming from, say, the etheric to the lower astral), and one doing the same for frequencies above the realm where the rescue is focused.

In addition, have someone in the physical watching these three, and channelling energy to whoever is struggling, as they’re probably coming under more attack. That person is the reserve force.

I’ve got to admit I’ve never been able to try this out, as I haven’t had the luxury of a large enough group of properly trained, capable people to be able to spare four people for such work, but if I had enough people … I could make each person a pair: one sitting up and thinking of defences on one axis (akin to doing defences to the four quarters), and one laying down doing the axis at right angles (akin to doing above and below). (Of course, that panders to people’s weakness in this area, rather than fixing the weakness, but that may be what is most pragmatic at the time.) Or … I could make each person actually a group of three who have connected their chakras using the Ranger technique I wrote about here and here.

Another thing that small military forces aim to do is to have a medic available. I would like to have at least one healer, and possibly more, available to help this group. At the spiritualist place I used to go to, I was trying to train enough people and set up a roster so I could have some healers turn up early, and give healing to those doing the set up and who were going to be working, one lot doing healing during the event, and another lot to give healing to people afterwards – particularly those who are packing up. For a major rescue event, it may be OK to have participants give healing to each other before starting (if they are capable of doing so competently, which may not necessarily be the case if their skills are in other areas, such as defence, or rescue, or scouting, etc), but other healers would be needed during the event and afterwards.

When we look at the work being done, well ... at the commencement of the battle, people are running aimlessly back and forth. There is no sense of being organised, and it is no wonder the forces of <evil> get into the castle. If, however, the wizards and witches had organised themselves using things like overlapping fields of fire, reserves, etc, maybe that wouldn’t have happened (then again, maybe it would have: the castle had a large perimeter, and there were not many capable wizards and witches … so maybe withdraw into something defensible? Of course, all this sort of commentary applies to the world created, where spells are largely one directional things coming out of wands – which is not the case in real life, where spells can be multidirectional).

How do we apply such principles to something like rescue of an uncooperative? Well, have one (or a few, possibly connected by the aforementioned Ranger technique) directly engaged with the uncooperative, trying to talk to and clear and heal them so they can be rescued, while one (or a few, possibly connected by the aforementioned Ranger technique) aim at freeing the entities who are being controlled [4] by the uncooperative and making sure they receive healing and whatever other assistance is needed (some, but not all, will themselves be earthbound, and thus in need of help to pass over), one (or a few, possibly connected by the aforementioned Ranger technique) aim at cutting off the uncooperative’s reserves (allies, ‘friends’, etc – including anyone controlling the uncooperative concerned), and one (or a few, possibly connected by the aforementioned Ranger technique) giving extra energy to whoever needs it – possibly at the behest of someone who is in …. gasp! shock! horror! … in command, or leading, or directing, or Weaving it all together, or whatever other term you wish to use for someone whose skill is tactics.

So … having shared that dream, I’ll go back and watch the rest of the film now :)

[3] I written previously about uncooperatives. See

[2] Please see here and my post "The Death of Wikipedia" for the reasons I now recommend caution when using Wikipedia. I'm also exploring use of h2g2, although that doesn't appear to be as extensive (h2g2 is intended - rather engagingly - to be the Earth edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")

(pronounced "new-MYTH-ear"; ... aka Bellatrix Lux? Morinehtar? Would-be drýicgan ... )

My "blogiography" (list of all posts - currently not up to date) is here.

I started this blog to cover karmic regression-rescue (see here and here), and it grew ...  See here for my group mind project, here and here for my "pagans for peace" project (and join me at 9 PM on Sunday, wherever you are, to meditate for peace), and here for my bindrune kit-bag. I also strongly recommend learning how to flame, ground and shield, do alternate nostril breathing, work with colour - and see also here, and be flexible.

I am a Walker upon the Path of Balanced Positivity, seeking Spiritual Maturity.
  • One size does NOT fit all.
  • Don't be mediocre - seek to excel.
  • Gnwmythr's Stropping Strap: Occam's Razor only works if  the simplest solution is actually recognised as being the simplest, rather than the one that best fits one's bigotries being labelled 'simplest'.
  • May the world of commerce and business be recognised to be a servant, not a master, of the lives of people.
  • Ban the dream interpretation industry!
  • A home is for living in, not feeling, becoming or being rich or a “better” class than others.
  • Housework is for ensuring a home is comfortable to live in, not competing to outdo or belittle others.
  • Being accustomed to interacting via certain rules makes those rules neither right nor universal.
  • Like fire to the physical, emotions to the soul make a good servant, and a bad master.
  • Expertise at intimacy and emotional happiness is generally not the same thing as spiritual growth.
  • "Following the crowd" is not "going with the flow".
  • Armageddon is alive and well and happening right now: it is a battle between the indolence of "I only ..." and/or "I just ..." and/or "Everyone knows ... " and/or "they can ..." and what Bruce Schneier [2] calls "security theatre" on one side, and perspicacity and the understanding that the means shape the end on the other. Indolence vs. perspicacity, and expediency vs. honour.
  • The means shape the end.
  • BPLF restraint of uncooperatives is NOT an opportunity for revenge or getting even - even unconsciously.
  • As words can kill, the right to freedom of speech comes with a DUTY to be as well-informed, objective and balanced as you can be.
  • My favourite action movie of all time is "Gandhi", although I've recently come across "Invictus" and might put that one in to that category. However, I loathe the stereotypical action movie - and, for similar reasons, I loathe many dramas, which are often emotionally violent, more so in some cases than many war films.
  • All of the above - and this blog - could be wrong, or subject to context, perspective, or state of spiritual evolution ...
Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger [people]. JOHN F. KENNEDY (who was quoting 19th century Episcopal Bishop Phillips Brooks)
Jesus loves you.  Odin wants you to grow up. (Facebook meme, according to John Beckett)
We make our decisions. And then our decisions turn around and make us. F.W. BOREHAM
Females, get over 'cute'. Get competent. Get trained. Get capable. Get over 'cute'. And those of you who are called Patty and Debby and Suzy, get over that. Because we use those names to infantalise females – we keep females in their 'little girl' state by the names we use for them. Get over it. If you want to be taken seriously, get serious. JANE ELLIOTT

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good [people] to do nothing. (based on writing by) EDMUND BURKE

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." EINSTEIN

We didn't inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we only borrowed it from our children ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY

Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Those whom we cannot stand are usually those who we cannot understand P.K.SHAW

Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, and the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change." SENATOR ROBERT F. KENNEDY (US Attorney General 1966 Speech)
Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product ... if we should judge America by that -- counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. ... Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile." ROBERT F. KENNEDY 1968
