When people die, they are helped with the transition from this world to the next: they are aware, often, of being met by loved ones (and that does NOT necessarily mean relatives!!!), but there are others around, helping them - even if the transition goes well.
If the transition doesn't go well, the person may need a rescue - and that is a very small minority of cases, but it does exist, no matter how many people are uncomfortable with that.
The same happens when spirits incarnate. The spirit will be given guidance on choosing parents, and will visit the parents and be present (nearby might be a better description) at conception, at which an initial bond will be made (almost like putting a "this space reserved" sign on a restaurant table), but the spirit is later assisted to gradually make more connections and start in-dwelling - on a part time basis initially, with more time gradually spent in the foetus as pregnancy develops - the foetus at around about the time of transition from embryogenesis to foetal development, at around the end of the first trimester (do some people really think a spirit is full occupying an embryo that is only a single cell, or a few cells, or has no recognisable human features yet?).
This occupancy is still only partial until the foetus has reached survivability. The spirit will be in-dwelling the foetus on nearly the same basis as a baby as birth approaches (just as the astral leaves adults when they sleep, so too is the case for babies and foetuses), but will be present for (and experiencing) the birth - and assistance on the non-physical realms is also present from the BPM Guides of the mother the child, other parent(s), and astral specialists in the process of dying-from-the-astral-to-be-born-into-the-physical world.
I've had experience with all the helping roles I've mentioned above, and others can also help with them if you're interested: simply express the desire to be taught and then given the opportunities and assistance to serve others in one of those roles, including what we here in the physical call "birth" (which, from an astral perspective, can be described as a sort of death as it involves leaving that world).
It can also be worth meditating on the process of conception, pregnancy and birth.
