Post No. 744 - A new protection prayer

Early in my Wiccan training, I was taught the following prayer for protection:

There is but one power in the Universe,

and I am a perfect manifestation of that Power.

As such, I will that the boundaries of my aura

be strong and healthy,

repelling all negative or unwanted energies,

while allowing positive and healing energies through.

Safe within these boundaries nothing can harm me,

for I am filled with the strength of the Goddess.

By my will, so mote it be - and it is so.

I’ve always had a few problems with that prayer:

(1) it is putting the Goddess up as an absolute Power, in lieu of a male Deity, but that denies the gender continuum, and that some people see themselves as free of gender;

(2) I don’t feel perfect, and no matter how much I say it, I’m not going to see myself as perfect, as
     (a), I am aware of how much growth I am making right now, and
     (b) I am aware that I have more room for growth – although I can’t claim to be aware of how much room for growth I have, no-one can claim that :) ;

(3) I am very much aware of a Hierarchy (if nothing else, some people are more evolved/experienced than I, and that places them above me in the Hierarchy – it doesn’t make them inherently better than me, any more than I am inherently better than people many would see as behind them on in this scheme of things – people like murderers, bigots, rapists, abusers of power, liars, etc all still have the same inherent worth as the greats, like Gandhi, etc … it’s just that the latter show more of their inherent worth);

(4) the values I place highest are not power, but Balanced Positivity, and Spiritual Maturity.

So … there is room to re-write that Prayer, I think. The problem is, it is very elegantly written.

Nevertheless, I’ve had a go (this is a little personalised):

May the best in me, my Higher Self,

and those of the Clear Light who assist me,

help me to keep myself grounded, centred and shielded,

to be Balanced and a Fulcrum of Balance,

a centre of Balanced Positivity and Spiritual Maturity,

with my aura continuously cleansed, cleared and closed,

repelling all negative or unwanted energies,

whilst allowing positive, balancing and healing energies through.

• Neither eloquence nor inarticulateness inherently indicates correctness, but, as words can kill, the right to freedom of speech comes with a DUTY to be as well-informed, objective and balanced as you can be.
