Post No. 3,512 - The biggest blocks to learning

This is from the psychic devellopment course that I am (slowly) working on.  

In addition to consider different styles of learning, different forms of knowing, and the many interactions between character aspects and matters such as learning, knowing, and doing (ethically), there is one - or two very closely related - issue(s) that, in my experience, are the biggest blocks to learning: 

• the far too persistent desire to please parents, authorrity figures, and peers - which is part of the desire for social connection / belonging, and to avoid exclusion / social isolation, which comes out of evolutionary experience as being necessary for survival (not everyone has this problem). 
  
  Unfortunately, I have seen FAR too many people get flustered or upset when something they adopted because it came from their parents/authority figures/peers is shown to be wrong - to the extent that they resist the truth, as well as put themselves unnecessarily through an emotional wringer. 
  
  Why unnecessarily? Because their parents probably did the best that they could with what they knew, but knowledge is not static - it changes as new facts/information/perspectives become available, which is good, or otherwise we would still be trying to do everything with stone tools and wood fires. 
  
  Past knowledge, if it is merely flawed and not outright wrong (bigotry is also taught by parents, and that is clearly and definitely WRONG), could be noted or respected by a statement along the lines of "that’s interesting, until now I’ve always thought [o_o] ", but statements along the lines of "everyone knows [o_o]" are just bullying attempts to shame or embarrass others into compliance with, frankly, stupidity (dishonourable amathia); 

• similar to that,there are people who get upset if they consider admitting to not knowing something, or that knowledge has subsequently changed (i.e., they are now, and possibly always have been, wrong), or they feel they are being corrected by someone they view as having lower social status (e.g., BIPOC, LGBTQIASB+, lower social classs, women, younger/older, disabled, different characteristics, etc). 

For the sake of others, neither of the above sets of people should be allowed ANYWHERE near a spiritual or psychic group until they can get rid of what are kindergarten level flaws. 

And neither of the above sets of people will be able to learn properly until they have got those childish flaws - the biggest, in many ways in many situations, flaws - out of the way.

Post No. 2,963 - An important video by a YouTuber on violence, non-violence, and misinformation

The video concerned is:

There is a moment in the film “The Imitation Game” when the Alan Turing character makes a comment to the effect that people “feel better” when use violence. In the context of broader social change, people who use or advocate for violence, rather than the long grind of creating sustainable change, may feel like they’re changing things ... but the only change is a temporary one inside them (an expression, maybe a release, of anger frustration etc).

Nevertheless, because they can identify a feeling they consider good, they will mostly have a desire - very strong, in some cases - to be allowed to continue the behaviour that they consider “makes them feel good”, much as alcoholics want to keep drinking because it “makes them feel good”.

Because of that, a number of those people are inclined to do exactly the same as gender flat earthers and ignore evidence or cherry pick, listen to their own echo chambers, and so on (and keep in mind some of these people are social authority figures - e.g., “bad” [violent] cops). 

These people need to keep in mind that, as the creator of the video points out, civil resistance is not peaceful - the non-violent (on the part of the activists) raid on the Dharasana Saltworks is a notable example. 

However, as one of the leaders of that event stated before the raid: 

“You must not use any violence under any circumstances. You will be beaten, but you must not resist: you must not even raise a hand to ward off blows.”  

The civil rights protestors in the USA prepared for protests by putting themselves through some of the sorts of abuses they expected to received (eggs being rubbed through hair,m shouting, etc).

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. cited Gandhi as having said: 

“If cowardice is the only alternative to violence, it is better to fight.”  

Civil resistance requires true bravery - not the short term expression of anger/frustration. 

Another key point is that it is a gross simplification to not include or consider nuance in any issue - being comfortable with nuance is vital to understanding the world.
