Post No. 532 - Phagic attack

Last night, during my meditation, I cleared as much as I could see of the negative energy in Russia, Ukraine and Crimea, and also Africa[3]. That was pretty much as expected, but what I didn’t expect was all the energy to clear from the Indian Ocean – energy that was making discovering debris from the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.

Why was that there, I wondered? And the answer was that it enabled entities who enjoyed other people’s suffering to feast on enhanced suffering.

That is what many uncooperatives do, feast on negative energy, but this struck me as being a little more specific and noteworthy. That may have been because I had been reading a book from the Dresden Files, where the term phobophage was used to describe a parasitic entity that fed on fear, and aimed to create circumstances that fostered fear (I seem to be addicted to alliteration, of late :) ). As another example of this, my experience of school yard bullies is that they are psychopaths who sadistically enjoy the distress they cause (I’m told there are other types of bullies, and my mind says that such is probably the case, but I haven’t been picked on by them, only the psychopathic type).

My sense, after last night is that this is serious enough to merit a specific term. It’s different to psychic attack, although psychic attack may be part of phagic attack, in that there is that … sick element of feasting on the type of energy (i.e. emotional response) that has been created by the attack.

This also gave me a clue to resolving an issue I’ve thought about at times as I read the Dresden Files books. In those books, attempting to rile people by upsetting them, or attacking them in a way that is misogynistic, is often portrayed as a tool for weakening people, or distracting them from other tasks.

It’s always annoyed me, as I’m an activist from some time ago, and know that words in the physical can kill, and that such misogyny makes the world a more negative (i.e. spiritually destructive) place, one where most (but not all) spiritual learning is made more difficult. And ultimately, that is one of the most important reasons for me to work at lobbying (writing to politicians etc) and activism to make the world a better place: it makes spiritual growth more likely, not less (although, as I have written elsewhere, the world being so negative does present significant opportunities).

The problem is, sometimes – a very, very, VERY few times, in my experience – it is true. Most times, it is personal, and thereby ranging from malicious to evil, and, as the personal is political, in need of lobbying or other activism to have it changed. If it occurs in the physical world, I will ALWAYS for spiritual reasons! - treat this as a matter where the other person’s actions need to change, not my reactions. I’m having those emotions to show that something is seriously wrong with that part of reality.

if, on the other hand, thoughts of such matters occur without a physical stimuli, or when I am in the astral, I will take it as a matter of phagic attack, and deal with it using clearing techniques.

I’m going to do some thinking and meditating on this point of view.

Post No. 500 - Perspectives

I have enjoyed not having to go to work this last couple of weeks, and have spent most of the time sleeping and resting in other ways (except for, according to the family joke, stirring every hour, on the hour, on the 25th to go out to the front lawn, say "Bah! Humbug!" to the world, and then stamp grumpily back into my cave :) ). One of those ways of recovering has been by watching movies, one of which has been "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part One" [2].

In that movie there is a scene where Severus Snape, who has not yet been revealed to be working for the 'good' people (there are some interesting shades of grey coming out at this stage of the cycle of films), arrives at the location of the antagonist, Voldemort, and sees a minor character, Charity Burbage, being tortured. Shortly after Snape arrives, Charity is killed - at which point I started wondering about a Christian saying to the effect "he who saves one soul, it is as if they have saved the world" (which I came across in Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Heartlight").

Snape could have saved Charity, but at considerable risk to himself, and definitely his mission would have been ended and the chances of Voldemort winning increased very significantly. So, in that - fictional - context, saving one life would NOT "save the Universe".

On the other hand, I recall reading of a story (which was itself mentioned in another work of fiction, so 'twas fiction within fiction) about a world where everyone can have a perfect life at the expense of one person who suffers incredibly for the whole world. In that context, saving that one person would have saved the whole world, as it would have forced everyone to take responsibility and act as adults.

Both of these are fictional examples. In the real world, most people live in situations where they do not have the opportunity to do work that will impact on large numbers of other people, and in that context, treating every person with dignity is the equivalent of "saving a person", and does, in a sense "save the world" as that person is central to the world that they influence - a theme which was explored by Jim Butcher in the Dresden Files short story "The Warrior" (mentioned because I have just re-read it; it is in the collection "Side Jobs").

There are grey areas around this. As an example, I had a discussion recently about helping the homeless, and my perspective was based on my experience of meeting an occasional homeless person, but not seeing the same person day after day after day, as the young woman I had been speaking to had, and thus we had slightly different perspectives on this (I was OK with giving money directly to the homeless, in addition to donations to charitable organisations, whereas the young woman I was speaking to favoured the charitable organisations as money given directly to the homeless people she was seeing day after day - in a different country, but one considered to be an advanced society/economy - had not, in her experience, changed their lives ... and both of us were very aware, by the way, of issues such as underfunded mental health services and escape from situations of abuse).

There are also exceptions to this. There are people who can and sometimes - not always - do influence the lives of large numbers of people, and thus possibly have to undertake the sort of weighing up that is the idea I am exploring. Such people include the obvious, such as politicians, media magnates, writers such as J.K Rowling, Gandhi (I've watched my "favourite action movie" as part of my recuperation), some of the famous, and so forth. But it also includes less obvious people - people who know how to do the clearing I have been writing about since these two very early posts on this blog (here and here), for instance, or people with strong psychic and/or spiritual influence.

I've written about such people previously -for instance, when I reviewed Dion Fortune's book "The Magical Battle of Britain" (my copy pub. Skylight Press, 2012, ISBN 978-1-908011-45-9, see here). Others have talked about this as well - for example, Sri Aurobindo apparently claimed that he had strengthened the defenders at Stalingrad by his powers of meditation (see "Briefing for the Landing on Planet Earth" by Stuart Holroyd).

In the case of less famous, but still competent practitioners, there is still a balancing act required - for instance, between participation in the social expectations of this time of year in order to preserve one's social networks and help others to enjoy themselves (or, at least, stay out of the way as much as possible) vs. addressing issues such as the civil war in South Sudan, the ongoing troubles in the Middle East, the Central African Republic crisis, the ongoing risk of a MAJOR war over the Senkaku / Diaoyu / Tiaoyutai islands, the worrying behaviour of some nation's leaders (e.g. Putin, and the appalling treatment of LGBTIQ people by Russia), and the continuing crises/crimes against humanity of poverty, hunger and thirst. People do not stop dying or suffering for Christmas ...

When I look at those issues, it helps me to put the festivities of this time of year into context, to not forget the privilege I have had by being born into middle class Australia, and to try and make sure I do what I can, whenever and wherever I can, for those who are less fortunate.

What will you do - right now, in the next few days or weeks, and over your life?

Post No. 409 - Magickal rules

I've been reading more Dresden Files [2] novels - it's my current favourite way of winding down, and has the bonus of occasionally getting me to to think a bit more. At the moment, I just read a comment that Jim Butcher has included in a few of his novels, and which has also been alluded to by Katherine Kerr in the Deverry series. That comment is to the effect that running water can be a barrier to magic.

Twaddle.

Yes, the energy of water, particularly of moving water, just as with any other energy, can have an impact on energy that passes through it, but that effect depends on:
  • how connected the levels of energy are - e.g., etheric energy is unlikely to have a major impact on higher astral or above energies;
  • whether the energies are antagonistic, harmonious or neutral - i.e., the water could HELP if you're doing something like a cleansing spell;
  • how strong the energies are, relative to each other.
That last point is one I wish to talk about.

Let's begin with an analogy. If I've got a baby lion, a few hours old, trying to threaten a full grown adult gazelle, I'm going to put my money on the gazelle. Going from that, if I've got a new fledged magickal practitioner trying to cast a spell at a distance, with lots of other energies to get through (because they don't know about taking short cuts through dimensions, but that's a topic for another post :) ), they're probably going to struggle. If they're keen to learn and grow and develop, they might try to work out why the spell was difficult, and, at that point, their humanness may lead to a fatal flaw - which is that, rather than admitting to a lack of skill and strength in their practice of the craft, they look outside themselves for things to blame. Hence, they may notice strong energy associated with flowing water - particularly if they were working in Europe (I am including the UK in that) a few centuries ago - and say "Aha! Magick can't cross running water!" And it - the mythology of magick and running water - all got built up from there ...

Now, why did I mention the issue of working in Europe a few centuries ago? Because they were times of desperation, and lots of pollution around settlements - physical AND emotional, owing to the struggle to survive that most people experienced at that time. Running water was a cleansing influence - until things like overpopulation and the Industrial Revolution stuffed up rivers and streams, but that happened after the mythology around running water had developed. Before then, I would suspect that running water was probably the strongest energetic influence on the locality, and if you've got a half-starved, quarter-taught practitioner trying to overcome that, it's going to be difficult for her/hir/him.

Not only, but in other pathways, such as shamanism, water can actively be used energetically  as in, merge into it and use the water to go on a journey or convey or receive a message.

The other thing about the Dresden series that I enjoy is its simplicity: there are a few, relatively distinct villains, whereas real life is far more complicated. In that series the lead character does some spectacular work to keep Chicago safe, whereas in my neighbourhood, I have to do lots of work to balance out the disharmonies and negativity that get projected out into the realms - what you might call "public psychic space" - and affect other people, stuff that comes from the modern struggle to survive, small-mindedness and lack of psychic knowledge and discipline. The simplicity of fighting a few demons and vampires, as compared to the exhausting complexities of real life magick, and a wonderful escapism for me ...

And on escapism, a link for lighter relief.
