The analysis in “Chapter Nine - Anatomy of a Mystery” is brilliant - the best I have ever read. To give an idea of that, the options examined include:    

“To conclude, I propose to discuss a few key questions and make a few observations of the material presented in this book.   Let us begin with what is probably the most crucial question of all:   

Who or what is Tom?   

As I see it, there are five possibilities to be taken into consideration:   

1. Tom is a pure invention, a creation of Andrija, Phyllis or John or of the three of them in collusion.   

2. Tom is an unconscious invention, a composite created out of information contained in the minds of the sitters by the well-known mediumistic process of “withdrawal” of such information.   

3. Tom is a secondary personality of Phyllis’s, endowed with psi abilities, that takes over when she is in a dissociated state of consciousness.

So we are left with two parapsychological hypotheses (possibilities 2 and 3) and two hypotheses that we may call transcendental (possibilities 4 and 5), all four of which come down to the basic question whether Tom exists independently of the three and their shared situation. Let us see what relevant evidence we can marshal from the communications that might throw some light on this question. In view of the complexity of the material and of the problem it poses, the most convenient approach will be to break down and analyse the evidence under a number of sub-headings.” 

(The sub-headings are:   “Alleged identity and abilities”,   “Patterns of relationships”,   “Other mental functions and attributes”,   “The content of the communications”,   “Is the material of the communications original?”,   “Parallels with Gnosticism”,   “Parallels with Esotericism”,   and   “Parallels with other contemporary communications”)   

and    

“... let us consider the possibilities as to how and whence the information content of the communications is obtained. Again I suggest five possibilities for consideration:   

1.    That the information is stored in Phyllis’s unconscious memory and becomes accessible only when she is in trance.   

2.    That in trance Phyllis establishes a rapport with the unconscious minds of the sitters and draws the information therefrom.   

3.    That she draws the information from the consciousness of a distant person or persons, or by clairvoyance from books, etc.   

4.    That she has access to the cosmic reservoir of information and memories that esotericists call the Akashic Records.   

5.    That she is indeed “channelling” information that emanates from a non-human intelligence.”    

Note: when I indicate that I do not agree with everything said, that is (a) because it is the truth, but also (b) because I consider you, Dear Reader, should make up your own mind about what has been written without me possibly biasing your assessment by giving my thoughts.

• there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;

Post No. 1,025 - Vale Sir John Whitmore

One of the most significant and inspiring books I have ever read is "Briefing for the Landing on Planet Earth", by Stuart Holroyd (pub. Corgi, 1979; ISBN 10: 0552109975, ISBN 13: 9780552109970; my rave review is here). I've written about that book, and the follow up, and the concepts they espouse elsewhere - see my (attempted) "definition" of Balanced Positive (and the referenced posts here, here, here, here, and here), and "Post No. 568 - Who will step up?", "Post No. 573 - Post Script to "who will step up?"", "Post No. 412 - Thoughts from the day of Tiw", "Post No. 881 - Transphobia, "Briefing for the Landing on Planet Earth" and Personal", and "Post No. 761 - Speculation".

In brief, it is written around three key characters: Andrija Puharich, Phyllis V. Schlemmer, and Sir John Whitmore. Sadly, Andrija Puharich and Phyllis V. Schlemmer passed some time ago, in 1995 and 2013 respectively (although no doubt they are enjoying their time in the astral - they certainly have done enough to have some enjoyment). Now, I have found, Sir John has also passed.

One of the regrets of my life is that I never got around to writing to Lobsang Rampa to tell him how I was a better person for having read his books - flawed though those books were - until after he passed. I was determined not to make the same mistake again with Sir John, after I found Phyllis Schlemmer had passed, and tried to find a way to contact him.

Unfortunately, the only contacts were via his - renowned - coaching organisations and publishers of his coaching books (one of which I recently purchased and read, and am now working at applying): I "followed" Sir John on LinkedIn (which is where I found out about his death), but none of these had any acknowledgement of what he had been part of - even his Wikipedia profile had nothing. So ... I hesitated, and now can only hope to relay my gratitude via the astral, as one of the many doing so.

My one joy is that Sir John's Wikipedia profile now has a very stilted, slightly inaccurate, and "deflectionary" acknowledgement of that time:

Sir John also wrote the Foreword to and is extensively quoted in a book called "Nine:Briefing from Deep Space" which was published in 2005. The book is based upon interviews with extraterrestial beings which a group of people including Sir John as well as Phyllis Schlemmer and Uri Geller. claimed to have had over a number of years. The book seems to have a popular following among certain new age groups and Sir John finds himself being quoted and spoken about on a number of websites which explore such claims.

I actually don't regret, this time, not trying harder to contact Sir John: it is quite possible that he had come to regret that time - in which case, far from conveying my gratitude, I would simply have added to his displeasure. As a point of idle curiosity it would be nice to know, but:

• the benefit I received is not dependent on Sir John's ongoing commitment/satisfaction;
• Sir John did a lot more in his life than only that project, and he deserves to be remembered for that as well; and
• I am, basically, a nonentity in Sir John's life - I have no right to know that, and this is just one of the things that goes with public figures - they DO have a right to their privacy. Above all else, however, the people who matter at this time most are his friends and family - and may they receive the healing and support they need at this time, along with Sir John receiving whatever healing, rest and recuperation he also needs.

Vale Sir John Whitmore: RIP, Great Soul.

Post No. 964 - Plants can Feel and Learn

One of the many fascinating things covered in the book "Supernature", by Lyall Watson (my copy pub. Sceptre, 1989 [first printing 1986; first pub. Hodder and Stoughton, 1973; first pub. in paperback Coronet, 1974], ISBN 0 340 40429 1), is the coverage of experiments by Cleve Backster on the response of plants to pain. Subsequently, other have tried this experiment with varying results - success, the case of  Marcel Vogel (mentioned also in Stuart Holroyd's "Briefing for the Landing on Plant Earth" and described as a flashy showman), and not so in the case of more conventional scientists.

Recently, I came across a Mythbusters episode on YouTube which appears to successfully replicate Backster's work - however, (a) they're actually testing for something slightly different (ESP), and (b) the article by Wikipedia which touches on this claims there was more work on that episode - not shown on the YouTube clip, but described here - which led them to conclude that the results couldn't be replicated. Well, the extra tests they tried (yoghurt and eggs) and the removal of people from the room are basically absurd - the original experiment used live shrimp, which had a more highly developed response capacity: substituting yoghurt is missing the point entirely (although it is also possible that some idiots in the USA have distorted the original results - making them both stupid and harmful), and I also question the removal of people from outside the plant's aura - particularly when the experiment has been located in a shipping container for the purpose of electrical isolation! How is the basically electrical phenomenon of thought meant to penetrate that barrier (although that may be due to lack of training in telepathy)?

I want to emphasise again that an important part of this is that the experimenters are part of the experiment: I question how well some of these "scientific" experimenters going into a situation with a bias that "this is pseudoscience" are going to work.

Post No. 881 - Transphobia, "Briefing for the Landing on Planet Earth" and Personal [Content Warning - hate, discrimination, transphobia]

Transphobia

There has been another debate (happened before the Orlando mass murders, but I've only just caught up with it) about trans-exclusion in the Pagan world, outlined in a Wild Hunt post, with some excellent rebuttals of the transphobic nonsense at:

• Peter Dybing has posted on this topic, leading to an apparent attempt by the bigots to have him sacked from his day job - which, if true, is an act of particularly contemptible hypocrisy and bastardry; 
• Alley Valkyrie has posted on the transphobic violence (and it is violence - in fact, I consider it should be possible to charge any person who misgenders a trans person with attempted murder, which is what they are doing spiritually and morally) - with one post being removed by the idiots at facebook;
• a particularly good post by Vanessa Blackwood of Sundown Style, which includes this: "By eschewing the transgender movement, we are not, in fact, supporting the rights of women, but in fact detracting from them. We detract from them by continuing to allow our culture to dictate what gender roles mean, and what constitutes feminine or masculine, and even to hold one as more valuable than the other.  We do this because we are still placing ourselves above others in a gender-based hierarchy. The transgender movement is not eroding feminism. Rather, it is expanding on a concept of equalism, in which all genders have equal rights, respect, and dignity in the eyes of society, and hopefully the law";
• and here, by a cisgendered woman which includes: "my own High Priestess’s insistence that I wasn’t connected enough to my “feminine side” when I wore jeans";
• and here, which includes: "Gender essentialism and separatism is the mirror image of patriarchy. We reject the patriarchy and the kyriarchy. We reject all binaries. There are men who reject rape culture and women who excuse rape. Let’s promote consent culture and gather our beautiful diverse tribe. Let us include people in, welcoming and celebrating and affirming diversity, not sowing hate and fear and division. Let’s create spaces that are safe for everyone of every gender. Pagan traditions (both ancient and contemporary) affirm the queer as sacred, as liminal, as being touched by the gods. All magic is magic. All love is love. All people are people"; 
• and "Not My Goddess, Not My Feminism, Not My Priestesses".

Incidentally, I rebut the claim that trans people claim biological differences are irrelevant. If that was true, no trans person would ever seek surgery, nor would any trans person acknowledge that M2Fs not having a period or trans people generally being raised in a different role have an effect, which has been acknowledged.

PS - just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, consider also this and this, which are sexuality related rather than gender identity, but also raise issues that many people feel uncomfortable and threatened by.
