I read an article this morning which argued that trans and gender diverse (TGD) people had “created” the current divisive debate about TGD people by suppressing debate.
As I read that, what struck me was that the whole situation was eerily similar to some of the past eugenic debates about race.
Whether those who argue against the right of TGD people to exist, or peddle “misinformation” (lies - as the author of the article I read did by referring to irreversible changes in puberty [underage TGD people do NOT get surgery - unlike intersex children and babies who are subject to unnecessary and invasive surgeries] and puberty blockers ARE reversible and ENABLE THE MINOR TO MAKE AN INFORMED AND AGE APPROPRIATE CHOICE) like it or not, they ARE on the wrong side of history, and decades from now they will in the same category as flat earthers, eugenicists, and white supremacists.
What we should be debating is how to better educate all people on gender, and how to overcome transphobic hate born out of personal insecurity and fear and taught bigotry - much as is needed to be taught to go from not being racist to being anti-racist.
