I recently found the following interesting and/or useful, and am posting them here in case anyone else does as well.

In the UK and elsewhere, recession is increasingly likely, and if mishandled, it could become depression.   So what is required?   First, honesty about scarcity. Rationing may be necessary to ensure fair access to essential goods.   Second, protection. Stronger social security will be needed to support those most exposed to the shock.   Third, redistribution. Progressive taxation will be required to sustain that support.   And beyond that, something bigger: reform. The institutions created after World War II — from the World Bank to the World Trade Organization and NATO — were built for a different world. They are failing now.   The deeper issue is this: neoliberalism built a fragile, carbon-dependent global system. That system is now breaking.   If it has failed, what replaces it?”   
  • “Anti-Protest Laws Struck Down - Jarrett v NSW”   https://youtu.be/7dNiFyeV6Vk   by Anne Twomey   “This video is about the New South Wales anti-protest laws that were struck down by the NSW Court of Appeal in the case of Jarrett v New South Wales [2026] NSWCA 62.   The video explains the Court's reasoning.  In particular, it focuses on the Court's view that dissent is part and parcel of a democracy and that suppressing political speech, for the purpose of protecting people from exposure to political expression that they might find to be upsetting, inflammatory or divisive, is not a legitimate purpose.   It concludes by observing the importance of tolerance as a civic virtue and an essential element of a representative democracy.”

  • “Justice After Hell: A Few Thoughts”   https://musingsofgnwmythr.substack.com/p/justice-after-hell-a-few-thoughts   “Ruminations by an Aussie who is NOT a legal expert”   Eventually, all tyrants fall, but merely removing a leader does not dismantle existing power structures. As such, when the current ruling class in the USA loses power, justice as well as political changes will need to be considered. Unlike the military Nuremberg trials, the USA is unlikely to face foreign-imposed trials or reparations. The Frankfurt Auschwitz trials (1963-1968) serve as a pertinent historical example for potential US trials, as they were conducted under existing German laws at the time of offences. No new legal frameworks are expected to be in place for similar trials in the USA. Current state trials have begun, avoiding issues related to federal executive clemency but requiring extensive efforts to ensure comprehensive justice across the country.. Current state trials avoid Federal Executive clemency issues, though they require considerable effort to ensure justice across the country and must avoid missteps that could undermine their success. These trials will need to address serious crimes beyond murder, focusing on large-scale injustices such as deaths resulting from mass deportations. The ultimate goal is to recover stolen resources for reparations and rebuilding efforts, necessitating courage and commitment to justice. There is also concern whether ICE's practices have been adequately addressed through legal frameworks, and whether the USA has an adequate number and capacity of legal officers to pursue these cases effectively.
