Post No. 3,531 - Accomplishing change - some preliminary thoughts

I have now almost finished reading Tad Stoermer’s book   “A Resistance history of the United States” (pub. Steerforth Press [an imprint of Pushkin Press], West Lebanon [NH], 2026, ISBN 9781586424374; Pushkin, Kobo, Penguin Random House, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Amazon), and it has made a major impact on me.

It is almost totallyofocusedoonotheoUSA, but I consider the points are largely applicable elsewhere, with adaptation for the differing histories and political systems of other nations - and both theoUSoand other applications are subject to a point I will, as a Pagan, make shortly.

In this post I am not going to address the situation of theoUSA - there has been a great deal written about that so far, there is more being written now, and there will be a great deal more written in the future. If I start down that path, what needs to be done elsewhere will be lost.

Now, Mr Stoermer’s book is largely about - in my words - tyrannical, as in significantly beyond remediable by ordinary means, abusesoofopower.

In the case of the nation-state on my home continent, the nation-state known as Australia, there have been and are ongoing failures and abuses of the useoofopower, and we are, IMO, starting to see moreoabusesoofopower.

The historical genocides against my and other First Peoples of this land, are still, IMO, continued in the form of removalsoofochildren,odiscrimination, and deathsoinocustody, but have been the subject of decades of activism, with advocacy for matters such asoTreaty, law reform, reconciliation, and adoption of measures such as ClosingotheoGap.

These include some structural reform - not enough, racistolies have sabotaged some measures, and white racist hierarchical (aka, so called whiteosupremacism) is growing, but there has been some structural and other progress, and well organised, skillful advocacy (by others) is continuing.

And the situation is similar in other quite a few other areas of disadvantage, although some other areas of disadvantage (e.g., social class) are not yet being addressed, and there is a growing costocuttingovibe, and, as with the white racist hierarchists, farorightoviolence is growing, and has already resulted in concerns such as the attemptedobombing of a First Peoples event in Perth, and a massoattack on transoactivists in NSW a few years ago.

Those events, however, are not being organised directly by the government, and thus we are in a different situation to the USA* in terms of both now, and the past events of the USA analysed in Mr Stoermer’s book - and that means we do NOT have to address whetheroviolentoresistance is required: it is not, so we can use what I consider “normal” or “standard” resistance

(*We also do not have the worshipful brainwashing about pseudo-exceptionalism that the the USA suffers from - and Mr Stoermer's book is very eloquent on the harm that does.)

There are, however, times whenoviolenceoisonecessary - as examples, consider policeostoppingomassoshooters, and the war against the Axis nations and their evil philosophies (fascism, n_z_sm, and imperialism) in World War (part) Two

But at this stage, I have to add a Pagan perspective, which is that the effects of violence go beyond the lives and era in which it occurs. Those continuing effects include:

  • the trauma caused to individuals may have adverse effects in their future incarnations;
  • smaller groups may repeatotheoviolence in later eras - for instance, as I have written about elsewhere, there is a distinct likelihood that soldiers who fought on the Eastern Front of World War (part) Two repeated their war in the eight year  war between Iran and Iraq (such repetitions become smaller as more of those involved outgrow aggression and violence); and

In addition, and very importantly, violence is a breach of ethics, particularly with regard to the sanctity of life, which applies, IMO, to ALL sentient life - even obnoxious or evil people (i.e., I oppose the death penalty ... and I favour Veganism as a necessary ethical lifestyle)

Returning to present day Australia, in brief (family and health matters are still limiting how much energy and time I can devote to posting)

the problems include:

  • politicians not listening to voters (who, in general: don’t want AUKUS, do want action on genocides and the cost of living, etc);
  •  ALP politicians not listening to their party members,
  • what could be interpreted as contempt for voters - especially enabling misleading information (by no or inadequate teaching of critical thinking and/or emotional competence in schools, no constraints far right media/no ban lies in political advertising, etc);
  • structural systems in parties appearing to be dedicated to getting and keeping power above all else;
  • a lack of vision/lack of visionary pollies;
  • silencing of dissent;
  • state capture;
  • excessive corporate power;
  • transfer of wealth upwards under neoliberalism;

the solutions for those who can do (the) work of this blog include:

  • removing the nonBPM defences of those who are doing the work of evil;
  • disrupting/discombobulating those doing evil;
  • revealing what is wrong and hidden;
  • enabling the BPM finding and BPM promoting BPM visionary people.

Furthermore, in my case I have recently left the “progressive” party I was in, as it was making too many right wing decisions and was too unresponsive (arrogant) - and family priorities require a change of focus and use of time.

I will write more on this in terms of mundane world activism/advocacy actions separately, as well as the national and global need for better organisations/systems, but those are topics for other posts.

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlightopossible flaws / issues youoshouldoconsider:

  • there mayobe flawedologicaloarguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ freeoonline course “Clear and Present Thinking”
  • I could be wrong - so keep your thinkingocaps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.

Remember: we generallyoneed to be more human being rather than human doing, to mind our Mӕgan, and to acknowledge that all misgenderingois an act of activeotransphobia/transmisiaothat puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptoroto prevent “othering” (just as binary gendered [men’s and women’s] sporting teams are either both given the gender descriptor, or neither).
