Post No. 888 - Book Review: “Thorson’s Way of Psychic Protection”, by Judy Hall

This post is a transcript of some notes I found recently that I made a couple of years ago for a review of the book “Way of Psychic Protection”, by Judy Hall (“astrologer and karmic counsellor”), pub. Thorsons, London, 1999, ISBN 0-00-711021-9. This was planned for a review of library books when I was a librarian at a spiritualist place: I’m no longer a member, and thus do not have access to the book to check points in my notes. That,. unfortunately, makes the review a little … “uneven”, in places.
*****
This book has a good, easy to follow layout – almost a “Dummies Guide to Psychic Protection”.
The definitions include a few unusual ones, but the definition of “psychic protection” is particularly good.
The unusual definitions include:
“psychic hoover”: someone who absorbs , and is harmed by, energy, emotions, feelings and impressions from another person or place.
(I would tend to simply say the person is ungrounded and/or open. but that lacks the elegance and impact of the above.)
“psychic attachment”: another person or being, alive or dead, adversely influencing someone through an auric attachment. Objects can also be the subject of psychic attachment. Thought forms can attach psychically to people or objects.
(I describe these as links, objects, earthbound entities [attached], etc.)
Other unusual definitions include “dustbin dimension”, and “emotional overwhelm” – although that last one is probably close to “Highly Sensitive Person”.
Note that both of us, the author of this book and I, could be accused of using jargon. We could also be acknowledged as using precise, technical terms that facilitate clear communication.
OK, so, moving on.
The author provides a range of techniques, with a view to you finding the ones that work for you – an approach I heartily endorse. The techniques include crystals and plant/flower essences (including the possibility of changes of smell if negative energy has been absorbed), activities to increase endorphins (e.g., if overwhelmed by others’ pain, with activities such as meditation, jogging, exercise and [presumably good] sex), activities to increase serotonin (negative ions, melatonin [apparently not legal in England], bananas).
The key tools promoted in the book are relaxation and visualisation.
One thing I would like to see addressed is that of disharmonious energy.
Ms Hall gives some history, including (alleged) past battles between Egyptian and Ethiopian magicians – there are some good connections with Ancient Egyptian mythology (the popular and widely respected [in my experience] author Christian  Jacq is mentioned), although I disagree with the author’s opinion that the ka is the etheric (p. 32; I consider the ka is more like the astral). I was interested in Bast as a means to connect with one’s Higher Self.
I particularly agree with the comments on drugs (they can blow the crown chakra wide open, and lead to “bad trips” which are negative psychic experiences – and alcohol is included in this area), the problem of lack of awareness of personal space / aura, and the potential benefits of having a personal journal. On that, just after I began my serious psychic work, back in the early 80s, I had one evening where I drank more than I should, and wound up experiencing very considerable psychic attack. If I didn’t know how to protect myself, I would have been in trouble. Ever since then, I have only ever drunk very small amounts of alcohol, and very infrequently.
There is an interesting discussion on healing auric damage by “hands on” healing – i.e., what I term channelled energy healing.
A few other notes I made as I read this book are:
  • p. 26: “Blame can keep people attached to their problems rather than release them.” At the time, I noted “this is, possibly, akin to Gandhi’s saying Do you fight to change things, or to punish?”, but I now consider that to be off the mark: the comment is simply noting that one can bind oneself to something energetically, and that energy can be dislike/hate/fear as much as something positive;
  • p. 37: as I read this page, I realised I need to do a definition – with diagram, of which there are plenty of good ones in this book – on “align” – e.g., “align the aura” means having all the levels of one’s aura nestle together like a Russian Matryoshka or “nesting” doll;
  • there is a good discussion on non-physical sex – including psychic rape, and things that can lead to a similar effect (e.g., and undue desire to maintain [“protect’] a daughter’s virginity, or suppressed incestuous desires). (Digression: the Essenes apparently ate fish because they wrongly thought fish reproduced asexually, and they – also wrongly - saw sex as unclean and associated with the material world: it would have been a shock when they got to the astral and found sex happening there as well!);
  • the Earth Star / Earth chakra is included in a chakra system which includes nine above the crown (I know and work with 3, and also know that there are, indeed, many more). Comments are given (p. 47) about a mineral which open the heart chakra, and that if lower chakras are “stuck” open, they can get attachment of lower astral entities; if higher chakras are stuck open, the risk if of attachment of astral entities. I’m wary of these comments to an extent, as the chakras are functioning all the time – as is the aura, but there are degrees of open/close while functioning, and if something is too open, yes problems can occur, but some problems can also occur if people try to close them too much, or to stop them from functioning at all;
  • there can be apparent psychic attack which is an outcome of holding on to outgrown / outworn concepts – possibly unknowingly. Interesting idea, to which I would add the possibility of a soul part / parallel having conflicting beliefs;
  • the author acknowledges “what some people would call demonic beings”. Unfortunately, I should have made a better note while I still had the book out on loan from the library … ;
  • good chakra exercises including using a pendulum, clearing links, cleansing an d grounding;
  • can have everyday life vulnerabilities as a result of “giving too much of oneself away”, so watch boundaries, be assertive, check are grounded, manage negative expectations;
  • sleep issues mentioned include residual energies in hotel rooms (which is why I cleanse such rooms when I have to stay in them);
  • protection of cars by pentagrams is included (I use a mixture of runes and Egyptian hieroglyphs), as is workplaces – with suggestions taking into account the possibility of being thought “weird” affecting oneself – and computers (which is one of the few parts of the book that I considered a bit strange / weird / mumbo-jumbo-ish);
  • p. 94 has  story I’ve either written about on this blog, or told others about, or both, of when the author went to a café and created light / positive energy about herself, only to have a nearby customer move out of that energy back into less balanced / more negative energy;
  • Soul Retrieval is included, which is defined as regaining a part of the Soul / spiritual energy which has been detached as a result of trauma, strong emotion, etc – whether in a past or the present life;
  • common sense checks on channelling (e.g., being ware of astral tricksters) are included, as is advice to think oneself back into the body if one finds oneself outside;
  • good exercise on cleansing and dispersing energies, and comments on the problems of disharmony in groups;
  • on p. 129 the author cites George Ritchie, in “Return from Tomorrow”, seeing ghosts in bars who were experiencing having a drink through the living – a problem I’ve written about, as have many others, and which brings to mind the concept of (harmful) “Hungry Ghosts”;
  • good description on pp. 131 – 132 of helping a man who had been a Jesuit who was haunted by that past life in his current life, through what was akin to a karmic clearing, as I wrote about here and here;
  • good comments about thought forms: “We create thought forms every day. When we have strong desires, we create what we want on the mental level. When we hate, or if we are resentful or jealous, we also create a thought form. Thought forms feed off strong emotional energy. It is that thought form that can attack someone against whom we have a grudge – even if we do not consciously wish it.” An excellent and, on the basis of my experience, very accurate comment. However, I’m wary of focusing on a “thought form police officer” approach – that can help in the short term, but at some stage one has to do one’s shadow work and face the issue leading to that dislike etc;
  • excellent comments about using “voice dialogue” (“a technique where a person (or therapist) intuitively speaks to, and answers for, a psychic attachment or spirit”) with attachments – it’s like rescue / clearing, but has a broader application. Such attachments can be “inner figures”, or aspects of oneself – and the best defence is “know thyself”;
  • psychic attack is covered in Chapter Ten, with a “love conquers all” type approach (which I qualify with “not always”) and a good description of the potential symptoms;
  • a resources listing is provided, but it has a mostly US and UK focus, although two Australian bush flower remedies are included.
In short, buy this book – as I will when I get enough money.

I started this blog to cover karmic regression-rescue (see here and here), and it grew ... See here for my group mind project, here and here for my "Pagans for Peace" project (and join me for a few minutes at some time between 8 and 11 PM on Sunday, wherever you are, to meditate-clear for peace), and here for my bindrune kit-bag. I also strongly recommend learning how to flame, ground and shield, do alternate nostril breathing, work with colour, and see also here and be flexible.
May the best in me, my Higher Self,
and those of the Clear Light who assist me,
help me to keep myself grounded, centred and shielded,
to be Balanced and a Fulcrum of Balance,
a centre of Balanced Positivity and Spiritual Maturity,
with my aura continuously cleansed, cleared and closed,
repelling all negative or unwanted energies,
whilst allowing positive, balancing and healing energies in and through.
The real dividing line is not between Christianity and Islam, Sunni and Shia, East and West. It is between people who believe in coexistence, and those who don’t.
