After weeks of encouraging from Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell and their ilk, months of violent white supremacist behaviour aided and abetted by US police, and careful placement of Trump acolytes in positions of power, Donald Trump loyalists are effectively attempting a coup a coup in the USA.
What an utterly appalling bloody attack on democracy.
This behaviour was entirely predictable as a result of the rhetoric of Trump, McConnell and other fascists - I and others have been writing about it for months (although, not knowing the US electoral system well enough, I didn't see this particular option), we've been seeing it on the steers of US cities for months, and we've seen it in Germany and elsewhere in the past.
WORDS MATTER! WORDS CAN KILL - as minorities know! Trump, McConnell and the others are - morally, ethically, and in a common sense perspective - guilty of causing this, and their current bleatings are a weak and contemptible attempt to evade responsibility for their EVIL.
Not providing a counter narrative, not teaching our children about what the yanks call "civics", not paying attention to those who have been excluded/left behind/alienated also played a role in letting us - globally - get here. Not acting against despots like Lukashenko, Museveni, and the others played a role in letting us get here. Not acting to effectively rebut conspiracy fantasists and haters played a role in letting us get here
Despite a carefully pre-positioned Trump acolyte refusing to deploy the US National Guard, I consider the forces of democracy and freedom will win.
But then every single person who acted against democracy in Washington today MUST be charged and tried - including with treason, where it applies, or the damage done to the USA's "democracy" will fester and seep and grow until the next coup.
And then they won't be so lucky.
The time for forgiveness and tolerance of hate is gone.
Wake the f**k up, USA!
PS - Those police who have been allowing insurrectionists to take selfies with them should also be charged with dereliction of duty and aiding and abetting a rebellion.
