Post No. 2,961 - Reflections on the past week, and some interesting reading/viewing [Note: Content Warning - links to reports on oppression/bigotry/hate, violence/abuse incl. SA & CSA/war. Reader discretion is advised]

Note: CONTENT WARNING - some of this content is about upsetting, disturbing or triggering events & attitudes. Seek competent help - including professional - if you need it. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that linked articles may contains names and/or images of deceased people. READER CAUTION IS RECOMMENDED! For anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as mental health support - <your nation>(which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/

I have written a few posts (including some commentary that I will not repeat here) this week that should be noted here as well:

This week has seen some examples of the sort of gross incompetence that was the subject of   Donald Horne’s 1964 book The Lucky Country (goodreads, Penguin) , which I mentioned in last week’s reflections post * , with employers exercising the best of 1850s paranoid factory supervision by forcing employees back into the office for no point whatsoever (on a personal note, every time I was ordered in to the office to interact with team members I would up predominantly doing so by phone, as they were all team members in other offices - which I persistently pointed out, and was persistently ignored ... the interactions with team members in the same office was almost exclusively based on me training them), and supervisors/team “leaders”/“managers” practising for other forms of bigotry, discrimination, and hatred by exercising their non-medical “expertise” and disbelieving those who have real illnesses.

And on bigotry, one grandmother took on child services in South Australia - who are ignoring expert advice and retaining prohibitive checks to lock out  capable, suitable, and better Indigenous family members from becoming kinship carers as part of their system of having the highest rates of removal in the nation - and won.   Also, Māori tribes make rare plea to King Charles for intervention in Aotearoa/New Zealand politics over concerns the conservative government will undermine their rights;   trans bashing for political gain includes too many US Democrats, including Kamala Harris, being quiet, and a neochristian “charity” in Australia abusing their status to vilify transgender people and engage in political campaigning against some senators;   the far right is mobilising against abortion rights;   and eX-Twitter has seen a terrifying surge of attack posts.

And on incompetence,   no-one is surprised that the LNP are exceeding the Queensland ALPs egregious abuses of Indigenous youth by doing pretty much the opposite of what experts recommend,   unions are furious at the national ALP - which has lost or risks losing their support,   the CSIRO has refuted the Coalition's ludicrous claims that nuclear is cheaper than renewable energy (see also this),   and   landlordism etc is seeing 10,000 Australians becoming homeless each month - a reported increase of 22% in three years

Furthermore, The Sentry has released a report showing how corruption costs lives

We have also seen   an anti-democratic gag on abortion debates for the next four years in Queensland,   the national conservative opposition “leader”  WRONGLY claiming no other nation’s leader stands in front of three flags (Uruguay has three co-official flags, members of the European Union also regularly display the EU flag alongside their national flag, Bolivia has a national flag and a flag for the Indigenous population, other nations such as Aotearoa/New Zealand have an Indigenous flag that is not co-displayed, and the two flags that Dutton is objecting to are flags of national significance - and we also have official military ensigns) so he won’t - which is an appalling act given  his  history - and will work to have Indigenous flags removed   and   has committed a staggering act of anti-bipartisanship - which directly conflicts with the warning from the head of ASIO,   and   in a fourth anti-democracy act, Australia “will get an effective veto right over Nauru entering a security agreement with another country under a pact that will prop up the Pacific nation’s budget”.   And a notorious social media platform has donated US$1 million to incoming self-professed dictator Tr_ mp ...   At least my nation will try (again) to make them pay a fair amount for news from the press.

A transphobe’s lie that she was assaulted by an alleged trans activist (actually a youth foster care activist) has been exposed by witnesses. (This transphobe - who is also an advocate for “disclosure” - is one of the reasons there are so many problems in some sections of the UFO field)   In similarly bad news,   the UK has decided to try killing trans and gender diverse children,  the now clearly homo-bi-trans-phobic FIFA have given a future world soccer event to sportswashing human  rights  abusing Saudi Arabia ...   and Queensland has finished formally jumping back to the 1700s ...

In South Korea, the president escaped  impeachment - to the anger of opposition MPs, but reportedly will resign ... but later reneged on that promise. Police investigations have commenced, and a second impeachment motion has been introduced.

However,   “The Observer view: from South Korea to Romania, the young are battling to defend democracy | Observer editorial | The Guardian”   https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/dec/08/the-observer-view-from-south-korea-to-romania-the-young-are-battling-to-defend-democracy

Also, the former Democratic Decay site has renamed and rearranged itself as the DemOptimism (a portmanteau of Democratic and Optimism) site at   https://www.demoptimism.org/welcome   which has launched its second focus area: Resisting, at   https://www.demoptimism.org/resisting-threats   (the first focus area was its original focus area of democratic decay [currently being rebuilt])

And the current Director of the USAs FBI will resign rather than serve under the incoming self-admitted despot.

And on human rights, a plan has been started to overcome medical bias against LGBTQIASB+ people;   and   a highly successful Aboriginal-led Kimberley youth programs has earned a two-year funding boost.

And the United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly for a ceasefire in Gaza, including a demand for H___s to release the hostages (and H___s have reportedly agreed to two of Israel’s conditions - including Israeli troops remaining in Gaza, and have released a list of the hostages they have) and affirming support for UNRWA. This is a powerful statement by the world: it would have been far more likely to be effective had it happened BEFORE 7th October ... Dithering on human rights issues is devastating ...

Other international news includes   Europe possibly having to double its aid for Ukraine under the USA's incoming president - whose “strong resolve to end the war in Ukraine” has been “saluted” by Ukraine's President (hmmm ...);   Taiwan has warned that China is carrying out some of its biggest-ever maritime military exercises with dozens of warships have been deployed along the island chain linking Taiwan with Okinawa and the Philippines - possibly in response to the Taiwanese President's recent visits to the USA ;   and, against concerns the USA's incoming president could possibly be subjected to nuclear blackmail by Putin, the combination of Georgian resistance, the fall of Syria, resistance to nominations, etc are blows to both.

The thought that is most to the forefront of my mind this week is that people whop receive discrimination too often have a tendency to assume they are therefore saintly, and incapable of doing wrong. That includes cisgender women who completely fail to handle the reality that cisgender women can AND DO PERSONALLY commit sexual abuse (including of children!) - especially the women committing those abuses, but also extends to other groups who have been in the press this week.

This is a failing - personal (psychologically & emotionally), socially (systemic [education, etc] and political), and spiritual (e.g., spiritual bypassing).

As with all such failings, that is not cause for condemnation, it is cause for clearing & healing to aid those afflicted with those failings - just as we would hope others responded to our failings (and mine are why I do things such as candles like this one).

 * And a very noteworthy article this week is:   “Australia and much of the world is on the cusp of profound change. What happens next is up to us”   https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/dec/01/australia-and-much-of-the-world-is-on-the-cusp-of-profound-change-what-happens-next-is-up-to-us   This article compares Australia in 1964, when Donald Horne’s book The Lucky Country (goodreads, Penguin) was published (and the nation-state Australia’s failure to develop a native space industry then is comparable to the nation-state Australia’s failure to become a powerhouse exporter of renewable energy over the last couple of decades - not to mention the nation-state Australia’s failure to match the innovations of the First Peoples of this island-continent, IMO - and the nation-state Australia’s follow-the-leader adoption of neoliberalism is a further example of mediocre leadership/management), with Australia now - and argued that Australia and the world globally now are on the edge of major change, but   “... if it is the beginning of a period of autocracy, new methods of transformational advocacy, already modelled by the community independents, we will need to reassert the best of humanity; signing online petitions will not be enough.”   Definitely some good food for thought in that article - on several matters.”

Remember: we generally need to be more human being rather than human doing, to mind our Mӕgan, and to acknowledge that all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptor to prevent “othering” (just as binary gendered [men’s and women’s] sporting teams are either both given the gender descriptor, or neither).
