Post No. 3,418 - Engineering and man-baby and boy-baby tantrums

One of the comments I have come across in relation to the current US leader is “man-baby tantrums” ... and it certainly fits both his behaviour, and that of some cismales I have worked with - although, in at least one case, they just needed some guidance from someone older and, since getting that, seem to have turned into a decent person. 

This included: 

  • a young male engineer who threw a tantrum because I wouldn’t let the aggressive idiot drive my personal car (being used for work with usage paid for by mileage) (this is the one that turned out OK later on);  
  • a young electrical engineer who threatened to destroy my career when I pointed out that people bought solar panels also out of concern for the effects of the climate crisis and not solely to save money (I think, at that stage, that sort of psychotic reaction may have infested a few in that profession, as their advice to the state government was always poor, and one was openly misogynistic)
  • two cismales passengers (engineers travelling to sites with me - on separate trips) in my car who deliberately threw rubbish on the floor of my car after being told to use a bag for rubbish; 
  • a male colleague who derided my work on an overseas trip later tried to - unbelievably - claim he was “joking”; and 
  • an IPOC who expected me to wash his clothes during an extended work trip (I refused - forcefully, and argued with his amathiac wife who tried to argue that I should have ).  

The fact that these incidents occurred in a workplace reflects badly on those committing the tantrums, and their managers, mentors, (male) peers, etc ... and possibly their parents. 

The workplace abuses were possibly, I suspect, also due to religious and other transphobic bigotry against me, but misogyny was the major component - in the 21st Century ... 

This sort of problem is not limited to men. Once, decades ago, a ciswoman who was interested in me threatened to make a false report to police about me unless I dated her in the way she thought I should (basically, I had to take her wherever she demanded ... I have also had such toxic females make other ludicrous, offensive, and infantilising of women claims). It was a three year old’s school yard type of response - from a supposedly adult woman (and another indication of how evil social status is). And on that line, the refusal (much later inability) of a (now former) dependent to get an income was what trapped in those abusive jobs - and that relationship scarring is the worst (both depth & breadth of harm, and the likely duration) of all the harm done by this. 

Oh - and I decided not to take legal action about these abuses for two reasons: one was knowing the sort of attacks that would be made against me and those around me (the threats were an example), the other was I wanted to try to make the places better - which had limited success. 

 

PS - another example of misogyny was an online meeting where a female colleague made a suggestion which was ignored, then a male colleague repeated the same suggestion - word for word. I pointed that out, and the lying IPOC tried to claim he was reinforcing her suggestion - which, when done for males, included the name of the original person, so I called him out for being a liar. 

PPS - why is it so often pampered city women in Western nations who do this - not rural (farm), and often not women from nations with harder living circumstances? Are the pampered city women in Western nations less capable of recognising when they are being duped by patriarchy? 

As Jane Elliott (originator of the blue eyes-brown eyes training) wrote: “Females, get over ‘cute’. Get competent. Get trained. Get capable. Get over ‘cute’. And those of you who are called Patty and Debby and Suzy, get over that. Because we use those names to infantalise females – we keep females in their ‘little girl’ state by the names we use for them. Get over it. If you want to be taken seriously, get serious.”

To reduce three of the most consequential resisters in modern history to a single, serviceable instruction — be peaceful, don't provoke, know your place — and then aim that instruction at whoever is currently in the way.   It is one of the oldest operations in the authoritarian playbook, and it has nothing to do with nonviolence. The British Parliament ran the same move against the American patriots. Southern moderates ran it against abolitionists. The defenders of Jim Crow ran it against the civil rights movement — including against King himself, in real time, while he was alive and the FBI was building a file on him as a threat to national security. King was not surveilled by the FBI because he was a calming influence on American politics. Gandhi was not imprisoned repeatedly by the British Empire because he made colonial authority comfortable. Mandela did not spend twenty-seven years in prison because the apartheid government found his methods acceptable. Authority was afraid of all three of them — genuinely, operationally afraid — because their resistance was working. The governments now laundering their legacies through senators and press conferences are the direct institutional descendants of the governments that tried to destroy them.   That is what I want us to work to understand. Not just the rhetorical trick, but its history. Where it came from, how it has functioned across two centuries of American resistance, who it has protected, and what it has always been designed to hide. The sanitised martyr has always been more useful to power than the living resister.”   The other comment to be made here is that the opening claim (by a cited speaker, not the author) that ICE and police leave people unless they do illegal stuff is clearly so wrong it is absurd and quite possibly a lie.
