Post No. 043 - Workplaces

I’ve been making a few decisions lately: one of the key ones was whether to stay in my current job, or accept an offer from another company. My decision was based on what was best for my personal growth, not necessarily what was easiest. As I wrote on another online article:

Work has been interesting for me of late because the company I am in is being sold. Effectively that means we get transferred to another company (this is the 3rd time this has happened to me - I have held the same job for 23 years, but the desk has been slid around a bit), but I have also been considering another job offer that would involve less staff, less stress and less work (they said I wouldn't have much on my plate for a while): in a sense I turned that down because it involved less stress - where I am now, and where I am going to, will be stressful (there's the stress of a brand new company and new systems for a start, whereas the other offer is from people I know and have worked with; both roles would involve building teams - in the case of the other offer from from scratch), but that will lead to me refining my ability to manage people (and hence work with group dynamics) and personal growth (if nothing else, how to manage stress :) , although I have more chance of learning from others this way as well: the new offer would have meant I was the only senior professional in my field, and this way there are quite a few others I can learn from).
Now that you’ve read that, consider my previous post about psychic attack: ever considered how much negative energy there is in the workplace, due to stress, impatience with other people’s priorities, clashes of personality, etc. I see lots of opportunity to do (psychic) good in many workplaces :) How? By clearing the negative energy, stimulating positive links (see some of my original posts), and choosing to be a source of cheerfulness.

Post No. 042 - Psychic attack: being caught out

I recently was caught out. I went out with a few people, including a Significant Other, for tea. While we were out, I started feeling rather ill – almost as if I had food poisoning, but without any diarrhoea, vomiting or anyone else who ate what I did becoming ill. Hmm ... what was going on?

I used the “White Light Test” I’ve posted about elsewhere to check for the possibility of psychic attack, and had a positive result (i.e., the symptoms reduced when I used that test).

The symptoms actually started a little while after an ex- of my Significant Other left, and further checking using that technique confirmed that the psychic attack was coming from my SO’s ex (the check was based on “take out the effects of attack from _”). I was surprised by this result, which is good, as my surprise is indicative of me not influencing the result [see note 1].

Does this mean the ex had gone off somewhere to indulge in some evil ritual? No.

Most psychic attack is simply strong emotion (in this case, jealousy) being allowed to “leak out”. There is no ritual involved, just emotion and a thought effectively directing the emotion. We are creatures of emotion and thought; we all live in a world of non-physical energies, and anyone who is trying to develop their psychic abilities or, in many cases, their spirituality, may enhance their sensitivity to such influences. Also, when we relax, we often diffuse out our aura, and that leads to a “thinning” of the natural “skin” around the aura.

In the case I am writing about, my S.O. was well protected, but I hadn’t thought to protect myself against any emotions – I didn’t need to formally protect myself against that person in particular, I simply needed to remember that I was in a public place, and that some energies could be, if nothing else, incompatible with me. In this case, I suspect that she realised at an unconscious level that her ill will was not affecting my SO, and turned her resentment and jealousy on to me.

Another example of what can happen is someone having a temper tantrum (adults can have tantrums just as much as kids!), and leaving a massive cloud of unpleasant energy. I have seen that happen, and people get headaches from walking into that cloud of energy. (This was at work.)

So: this was good reminder to use protective prayers [see note 2] and other techniques [see note 3].

It is also a reminder to all of us to make sure that WE don’t indulge in such behaviour ourselves – by being aware of what we are feeling (and dealing constructively/responsibly with such matters by personal growth etc), closing our aura, asking that we be helped not to adversely help others, etc.

Now, having been a klutz and allowed myself to be attacked, what did I do?
1. Asked for protection (better late than never)
2. Grounded myself and released as best I could (using a technique where I visualise colours coming in to my solar plexus as a I breathe, then flowing out through my body and aura as I breathe out; the colours I use are pink, blue, green, gold, orange, purple and white).
3. Went home, and then used the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (see elsewhere on this blog, or try an internet search) to establish a safe place.
4. Rested, then continued used the colour breathing, grounding, prayer, etc to remove the energy from me, and sent healing to the attacker to try to lift their state of being.

One of the debates I’ve come across a few times in the psychic/spiritual/metaphysical world is whether it is best to deflect psychic attack energy, or fight it actively. These debates have been interesting, but the problem is that none of them have considered the possibility that the psychic attack is from someone they care about – perhaps a younger, jealous sibling, or a friend who envies your accomplishments, or a partner who is frustrated and resentful at something (if you are a younger jealous sibling, envious friend or frustrated partner, do be careful with your energies!) – rather than some malicious, evilly inclined dude.

It happens – it really, truly does happen (it is bad enough when some couples disagree emotionally). And when it does, are you really going to vigorously fight against someone you love? Or are you going to deflect and try to get the attacker to change? Assuming you answered with the latter, so how about living up to that standard when others attack you? (There’s a whole debate there about things like motivation, and tricks like the Buddhist notion of considering that every sentient being you meet could have been your mother in a previous life, and treating him/her/hir with the appropriate respect.)

I have a couple of other points on this topic.

Firstly, clippings and hair (from brushes etc): do you collect and dispose of them "safely"? I know people who burn these to avoid risking them coming into the possession of those who are either inclined towards ill-will, disharmonious, or wish to take unreasonable advantage/use of the person's skills/energies/abilities/time/resources. I've done that when staying in hotels (on work trips), but rarely in other circumstances (I might reconsider that). (Have a look at the film "The Missing", starring [Australian] Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones, to see a highly dramatised version of what could happen [supposedly - although the principle is what I am writing about here].)

Secondly, some people have the view that psychically attacking companies who do the wrong thing by them is acceptable - which is probably justified along the same lines of thinking of those cretins who think stealing from a large company, like Woolies or Target, is a victimless crime that has no impact on everyday shoppers. Anyway, the point is, it does affect individuals, and some of those people could well be the attacker does or could care about (for instance, I recently found out that my sister used to work for a phone company whose ISP division I used to use). I've been harmed by "business practices" (yes, I'll be vague) of some ex-employees (who tried to get me to go over to their company), so this is a topic which is somewhat personal for me.
There is another point I would like to cover on this: the power of the spoken word. That, however, can be a separate post. But I may yet add more to this post still :)

[Note 1]
If you would like a good analysis of potential distorting influences, read Stuart Holroyd’s “Briefing for the Landing on Planet Earth”. This book covers the potential for such things as mediums to actually being telepaths who are “reading the minds” of sitters, rather than actually channelling an entity. This doesn’t mean that mediumship isn’t possible, but looks realistically at the possibility that other forms of psychism could be at play in a situation. My being surprised supports (it doesn’t conclusively prove) that I wasn’t influencing the result.

If you want to adapt this technique (i.e., the White Light Test) to overcome this, you could try a “blind” technique, such as giving a friend a list of what you want to check for, and have them think of one of each of these factors, in a random order (and maybe more than once for each factor), and rely on your guides to read your friend’s mind.

Note 2
An example prayer is:
”There is but one Power in the Universe, and I am a perfect manifestation of that Power. As such, I will that the boundaries of my aura be strong an healthy, repelling all negative or unwanted energy, while allowing positive and healing energy in.”
or
“I ask my constructive influence* guides to protect, guide and heal me, and all people, energies or things which could or will influence me and those about me, or will be influenced by me or those about me.”
* I used to use “Divine Light Force”, but what I really want to cover is “those guiding influences who have a constructive influence on me”. It IS necessary to be specific, as otherwise it IS possible for malicious entities (who do exist) to take advantage of slackness and step in and provide their version of guidance.

Note 3
Such as visualising an egg shell around oneself to close the aura, making sure one’s chakras are closed, visualising a tree root into the earth to ground oneself, or making sure all excess energies have been released.

Post No. 041 - Mediumship - part three (last part)

In my experience, most people who start exploring mediumship tend to do so from the point of view of seeking to have greater contact with guides/spirit teachers/patron deities/etc. Those uses can indeed be valid, but the best use I have personally encountered for mediumship is doing rescue.

Rescue is the art/science of guiding those souls which have wound up in an earthbound condition after death (which means they have wound up "stuck" around the physical plane, rather than moving on to higher realms (astral/Summerlands/etc) as they should. This can happen when people die in pain (physical or emotional) and stay focused on the pain, or in some other circumstances which require an intense focus on the physical plane (such as soldiers who die in combat). In many cases, rescue is just a case of gaining the earthbound spirit's attention sufficiently to break their focus on the physical, and, say, bring their attention to what they can now see about them, which allows them to become aware of the spirit guides/helpers/etc around them, who then help them to pass on. (Some of those spirits may be the astrals of people who are still alive on earth: such people are sometimes referred to as shadow walkers or world walkers.) I've given links for a few sites on rescue previously: a few more (which may include some of those from before) are given at the end of this post.

One of the ways which can be used to gain the attention of the earthbound entity is have them be channelled by a medium. The change (to the earthbound entity) of body (especially, for instance, if the medium is of a different sex) and of circumstances (e.g., by the interviewer [who is speaking to the earthbound entity being channeled by the medium] beginning with the question "do you know where you are?") is very good at gaining their attention, which can then be directed towards passing over.

Such conversations MAY include some minor resolution/partial resolution of issues, but the sort of prolonged, drawn out, long, heavy emotional focus shown in the TV series "Ghost Whisperer" (whilst great TV - and I watch the series, even if I cringe at some of the technical '"rescue" aspects) is not part of the experience of myself or others who work in this field.

There are other earthbound entities, who know they are earthbound, and wish to stay that way because they enjoy being able to manipulate and torture others who are incarnate (i.e., "physically alive"). When it is time to ensure those entities pass on, the experience is MUCH tougher - and MUCH more rewarding from the point of view of personal growth. The key aspect here is that:
(a) most mediumship in this circumstance is not deep mediumship, which means that the medium's personality can still have a part to play, and
(b) under those circumstances, entities who are, for instance, angry, can only be angry in a medium if that medium has the potential to be angry.

If you find you are channelling entities who are uncooperative, or angry, or depressed, then you know you have some work to do on yourself in those areas (see some of my earlier posts on workshops for suggestions on how to work on these ideas; by channeling such entities you earn some karmic credit towards being able to improve those aspects of yourself). On the contrary point, if you find these entities are cooperative, pleasant or communicate well, then you know those areas are reasonably strong in you. One of the traditional ways that I understand Indian yogis work is to absorb entities or energies which are causing problems to others into their own auras, from which the potential for such problematic behaviour has been thoroughly replaced by positive behaviours that the energy/entity is "cleansed". I've done this in a minor sense, and it is VERY testing of how well you have evolved: I have the greatest respect for those people who can do this.

This post will have to be continued and elaborated over time, so ... stay tuned :)

Post No. 040 - Mediumship - part two

Life has intervened since I started my series of posts on mediumship: an 8 year relationship has ended, a new one has begun, I'm moving homes, I had the first birthday of my recently deceased (adoptive) mother, and the workload at my day job has been so severe that I'm considering changing jobs (again).

The move has been "interesting", and has shown the appalling ignorance and complete, utter and absolute lack of spirituality or consideration of some people in service companies (which may yet be the subject of legal action :) ). But that's a topic for another post - or another blog, even.

I'll return to mediumship. My last post on this, at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2008/03/know-thyself-be-thyself-and-occlumency.html, warned of the dangers, and the need for self-discipline. I'm now going to give you a few exercises to start developing your mediumship.

The first exercise is quite formal.
1. establish AND CHECK protection
2. when you feel protected, ask your guides to take turns at coming closer to you, coming partially into your aura.
3. note the (psychic) sensations you feel (which may be akin to a change of mood or even personality, as they start to overshadow you more and more), including when you start to notice a change and when that change dissipates
Continue this until you can clearly notice the changes.

When you are TOTALLY PROFICIENT at the above, ask your guides to start drawing close to you during the day (which can occur, as the protection you should be asking for regularly is to keep out disharmonious/inappropriate energies, not your guides), so that you start to notice such changes/influences when they occur unbidden. THIS IS IMPORTANT! The problems that can occur with mediumship are not failing to experience any mediumship, but opening oneself to problems such as obsession/possession, which can come with problems such as changes of personality, lack of being grounded (are you still practising grounding yourself? If not, you won't get far usefully with this exercise), etc.

I remember what I was like when I was young and impatient; I'll think very carefully about how much more I post on this blog on this topic - and I have a few other topics to cover anyway.

Post No. 039 - Know Thyself, Be Thyself and Occlumency: A Mediumship Primer

Something I have written about previously is that we can all influence each other, in a range of ways - for instance, my post at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/12/response-to-assasination-of-benazir.html has some comments about how our energies can influence what is happening in other parts of the world, my post at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/11/families-funerals-and-bev-brock.html talks about how the living can influence the souls of the dead by doing rescue (also touched on in http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/workshop-on-past-lives-part-2.html), and my posts at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/workshop-on-past-lives-part-2.html and http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/11/protection.html cover protection and psychic attack (the latter also being part of http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/control.html).

So the living can influence each other, and the dead; the dead can also influence other dead people, and the living. Sound scary? It shouldn't - the influence of the dead on the living includes the guidance and protection many of us receive. Other, less desirable influences from dead people are not that much different, if at all, from the less desirable psychic influences that come from the living - AND ARE DETECTED THE SAME WAY. (Good influences from others also includes the closeness that one can have with friends and lovers.)

They are also protected against the same way.

Those skills of detection and protection also lay the ground for developing mediumship.

At this point, I'll cover a technique I was taught at the New Age group ASPECTS (see http://home.vicnet.net.au/~johnf/welcome.htm): the "white light test".

White Light Test
This test is for the purpose of checking causes of something - e.g., whether, perhaps, a headache is caused by psychic attack, or a blockage of a psychic ability is caused by a karmic restriction.

1. Establish protection (including checking that the protection is effective),
2. surround the affected area (e.g., the blocked chakra) or your entire self with constructive energy (in a New Age group, "white light", but it could be an inspiring melody or a soothing scent [visualisation seems to works more easily for most people with visual things like colour, but can also be used to create psychic scents or sounds]),
3. ask your "constructive influence guides" (meaning, your "spiritual" guides, your Higher Self, you Patron Deity, your power animal/totem, your ancestors, etc - I use the qualification "constructive influence" when I am working [I actually use the phrase "Divine Light Force"] to make sure I am clearly excluding the influence of malicious or destructive people) to momentarily take out of <name effect/thing being checked> the extent of that which is due to <name influence being checked>.

If, say, you are checking whether a headache is due to psychic attack, go through steps 1 and 2, and then ask (I'll use the phrasing I am familiar with): "DLF Guides, please remove from this headache the extent that is due to psychic attack for a clearly noticeable time". If, say, 90% of the pain disappears for a second or so (or less: be prepared for this change to be brief), then you have good evidence that the headache could be due to psychic attack (and then take care to build your protection and psychic health, strength and well-being [see links above, and other of my posts]). If, say, 10% of the pain goes, you can probably assume that none of it is due to psychic attack.

As another example, perhaps you are having some problems getting a psychic vision, and may be wondering if this is due to a blockage in the third eye chakra. You may (after steps 1 and 2) ask "Higher Self, please remove the effects of any blockage in the third eye chakra from my attempts to obtain a vision for a clearly noticeable time". If, say, you get a sensation of energy starting to flow or move for a second or so (or less: again, be prepared for this change to be brief), then you have good evidence that there is a blockage (and then use colour visualisation to clear the chakra [see http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/secret-science-of-hugs.html], or maybe do a crystal balance [see http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/workshop-on-crystals.html]). If nothing else happens, consider other options (but see the qualifiers below).

OK, let's have one more example. Say you're trying to build a psychic melody to do a healing, and are not having much success, and are concerned that your lack of success may be because the melody is not in harmony with the healing effect you are trying to create. You go through steps 1 and 2, and then perhaps ask "Patron Deity Horus, please remove from my attempts to create this healing melody any restriction due to the melody being inconsistent with the healing effect I am trying to create". If there is no change, then you may need to consider other factors, such as your skill levels, outside interference, insufficient karma on the part of the patient, etc, etc, etc. If there IS a significant change, find another melody, or another way of doing the healing.

There are some qualifiers to this technique:
(1) there may be a valid reason for you not to know the answer - for instance, you may be meant to be denied the answer to force you to think something through properly, or because you are meant to go through an experience, or - and this one can be a toughie! - because someone else is meant to help you
(2) the technique assumes that you have enough karmic credit ("good karma") to be able to have the energy shifted for a moment (that can take some effort in the case of a strong psychic attack)
(3) people's preconceptions can be insurmountable - ESPECIALLY your own. In general, it is best (but not always practical) to not ask a question unless one is totally (emotionally, mentally and spiritually) comfortable with all possible answers - AND the absence of any answer.

On that last point, I recently saw a programme on TV about the Bermuda Triangle which suggested that the "missing flight" (Flight 19 - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_19) may have become lost through the Flight leader becoming so fixated on a perception that he considered his instruments - including his compass - were wrong, whereas they actually were correct. You need to at least acknowledge the possibility of such fixations to yourself, and then work calmly, rationally, in a balanced, objective manner on any actual or possible problems. To understand this issue and it's potential shortcomings better, also have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occlumency#Legilimency_and_Occlumency.

That attitude: calm, objective, balanced, is a key matter in developing a sound base from which to develop your ability to work as a medium. If you are interested in developing that ability, how would you develop and maintain your ability to attain and maintain that state of being? How are you going to develop the inner strength to calmly accept disappointment and then identify and work out the solution to whatever it was that disappointed you (usually poor or inaccurate channeling, in the case of mediumship)?

If my experience is anything to go by, often you can identify problems - particularly when they are occurring - by being observant and paying attention to your inner-scape. YOU know when you are fooling yourself; you just have to be unafraid of that possibility. You have to be able to see that such problems are just one more step along the path of developing the skill you are seeking. ways of identifying that resilience is my key interest in writing this blog today.

I consider that the better you know yourself, which is how you can then best be yourself (how can you be yourself if you don't know what that is?), the more likely you are to attain and maintain that calmness, and to be able to detect the influence of others on yourself. Under most circumstances, when such influences occur, you are likely to want to then adopt ways of minimising that influence (e.g., by establishing adequate psychic protection - which is then checked!), but when you are developing your mediumship, you want to develop the connection you have selected (commonly that is with a "guide" or deity, but it could also be with, for example, an earthbound entity for the purposes of "rescuing" that entity.

In this context, "rescue" is basically about directing an entity who has become earthbound (stuck around the earth plane after the death of their physical body) from this plane to the astral world that they should be in. Some links about rescue (and I don't necessarily endorse any of these links; several of these are just from an Internet search - I won't say which as I wish you read with your brains switched on) are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_rescue
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~johnf/welcome.htm
http://www.spiritrescue.co.uk/ (this site includes examples, and discussion on the use of mediumship for rescue work, including trance to rescue earthbound entities)
http://www.spiritremediation.com/spirit.htm
http://www.lorrainealder.com/

I'll come back to spirit rescue later. For now, I wish, dear Reader, for you to consider the topic of knowing and being yourself. How do you do this?

Well, life experience can help (not always, though, if the life experience is destructive). Thinking, including meditation (reflective meditation, not relaxation meditation) can help. Personal growth work is good for some, for others - depending on the technique - not necessarily so good. Similarly, some psychic/spiritual growth or development techniques suit some people, others suit others.

You have to find what works for you. Research - shop around, critically.

One clue I'll give you now, though, is that being dogmatic or set in your ways or beliefs is not a sign that you know yourself. The only constant in the Universe is change, and you cannot say that you know yourself until you know how you will navigate your sense of identity through the reefs of ever-changing time.

Perhaps the key for the purposes of this post, though, is the ability to recognise yourself. Keeping some sort of journal helps here, as reviewing it can help you recognise when your emotions, thoughts, etc are not true to your self. I actually use a numeric record, where I allocate numbers to how I feel generally and on some specific aspects, with respect to mind, body and spirit. I don't fill it in every day, but I try to do so regularly enough so I can help endorse knowing myself.

I also find that doing my psychic exercises regularly, including colour visualisation, practising psychic muscles, etc, helps me to simply recognise when an energy in my aura isn't my own - which more often than not is a good experience, as it can show friends/partners/guides etc are thinking of me.

To develop your mediumship, you will need this ability of (psychic) differentiation of energies.

You will also need to develop your ability to ground yourself - possibly when others are trying to get you out of your body. Think that isn't likely to happen? Think again! Too many drunks in pubs have auras that are crawling infestations of dead alcoholics striving to get as much sensation of drinking alcohol as they can through forcing gthe drunk to "just have another".

It happens - and this is no place for airy-fairy, floaty types. In my opinion, developing mediumship is a challenging task, and it requires well grounded, capable people who will be onjective and self-honest. Being able to ground yourself under stress is another vital skill - unless you are prepared to accept your teacher forcing you to come back, which is likely to leave you with a headache! In many situations, beginners seem to think that being lost in a psychic sensation is a good think - as in, "oh that was so good I didn't know where I was": in the context of learning to do mediumship, unless you are that extremely rare breed who is a genuine deep trance medium, it is more often than not a sign of dangerous lack of discipline and possibly self-indulgence (in the sense derided by Castenada's teachers [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Castenada, which as of Saturday 1st March, 2008, has it's neutrality disputed).

I'm being harsher in this post than I have in any other, I think. That is for a good reason: becoming a medium can be a tough challenge. You need to be skilled in knowing yourself and psychic differentiation, in being grounded no matter what (including when others are trying to get you off with the fairies) and in psychic protection. You'll also need a good teacher.

OK, I had planned on writing more, but I've been at this for a while now, so I'll leave it at that for now. I may come back to rewrite this post more, or I may put more in another post.

Post No. 038 - Giving oneself a kick up the backside [anger, interpersonal interactions, judging others, life lessons, personal characteristics, self criticism/knowledge]

When I was a teenager, the first Oracular system I worked with was the I Ching (using coins; you can find out more about the I Ching at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_ching, which has a note that, as of 24th February, 2008, the neutrality of that article is disputed - so read with your brains turned on, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagua_%28concept%29).

I enjoyed the "flow", the combining of energies (all the hexagrams come from eight trigrams), the insight - and the fact that it would occasionally tell me off (I would, from time to time, get readings which said, bluntly, "you are using the I Ching too much!" :) ). I still have of the earliest books that I bought on the topic: "I Ching: A new Interpretation for Modern Times", by Sam Reifler (pub. Bantam, 1977 [1st pub. 1974], ISBN 0-553-11789-0).

It is the aspect of "being told off" that I wish to write about. It is very easy, when one is starting off with personal growth/metaphysics/spiritual matters, to get carried away by the joys of whatever one is studying. This can make one vulnerable to sceptics, as one is so enamoured with what one is studying that one lacks a balanced perspective. One example I can recall from my high school days in the 70s (does one's distant memory get better as one ages at the expense of short term memory?) is of some (male) students making fun of a female student for saying everyone should love each other by deliberately misunderstanding her intent, and debasing he appeal for compassion into a mere request for casual sex. When I confronted them (I was far more outspoken in those days), they admitted they knew what she meant, but the damage to the young girl had been done -and those boys probably never even had the decency to apologise to her (if they ever argued that they were just having "fun", they should be aware that "humour" can and is used as a weapon to control others, a very vicious weapon - which is something shown by some research into engineering students by the National Centre for Gender and Cultural Diversity [see http://www.sisr.net/ncgcd/]). There was a similar incident when I was at uni: I can't recall the details, but I CAN, even now, 30 years later, recall the pain my friend went through.

Consider the following two scenarios.

Scenario 1:

A "I've been getting right into the Tarot lately, and it's absolutely wonderful"

B "What are you into that shit for!"

A "It's not shit!"

B "No sane person believes it"

Scenario 2:

A "I've been enjoying working on the Tarot lately, and I'm getting a lot out of it."

B "What are you into that shit for!"

A "Do you disagree with the Tarot?"

B "Of course I do! No sane person believes in it"

A "That's quite a sweeping generalisation. What do you know about the Tarot?"

B "I haven't touched that rubbish - why would I know anything about it?"

A "Then how can you criticise what you don't know?"

B "There's no scientific evidence for any of that crap?"

A "Isn't there? How much scientific literature do you read, then?"

I'll stop the example there, as there are quite a few responses possible (at each step, actually). The main point is, by not taking the critical (bigoted?) response to heart, which requires a certain amount of objectivity, one can respond more effectively. That's really a topic for another post (mostly on assertiveness, which is a crucial spiritual skill, in my opinion), although my post at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/communication.html might be of some use. To return to the point of this post, if I felt I was either losing my objectivity too much, or getting complacent, or getting self indulgent (including emotionally and/or psychically - Carlos Castenada's writings [as usual, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Castenada if you want to know more about Castenada - but keep your brain switched on, as this article also had a note warning that it's neutrality is disputed] include some tough comments from his teachers about being self indulgent rather than self disciplined about his shamanic practice) I would ask the I Ching for some criticism - for a metaphoric kick up the backside.

It takes a certain amount of objectivity to be able to do that. I'm not going to say it takes self esteem to be able to ask it, as the struggles I was going through at that time were associated - in part - with a very low self esteem, but it helps to act positively in response to the criticism if you have a good self esteem.

Interestingly, I've seen this at work. As an engineer, I am expected to actively seek independent checks of my work before it goes to the client - which applies to other engineers as well. Unfortunately, dealing with that isn't taught at uni, and some less experienced engineers don't always cope with that - particularly if there are personality clashes with the engineer doing the checking. There can be clashes also arising from a misplaced loyalty to the lead engineer of a team as well - which is a problem that particularly mars too many engineers' responses to criticism from members of the public, some of which is ill-informed and some of which is well-informed.

As another digression (it's that sort of lazy, "floaty" Sunday, with some welcome rain outside and relaxing Celtic music in the background), one of the things I dislike at work is the expectation that one will "blow one's own trumpet". I find that arrogant - it is the sort of characteristic which would exclude people from friendship with me. At times in the past I have blamed this on too much paternalism (male influence) in the workplace or too much American influence in the workplace. Now, as I have found out more about men and Americans as I grow older, I tend to say this behaviour is undesirable, and leave it at that (although there does need to be more of what is commonly attributed to females in business practice: the current emphasis on competition is unhealthy, and harmful to society - at least things like "alliances" [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_alliance] and "public-private partnerships" [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-private_partnership] are restoring the balance).

Going back to the point of this post, we all tend to get complacent, or overwhelmed by life. From time to time, however, it can be good to use whatever oracular methods we are using to ask for some objective criticism. If you're worried about this, you could also ask for guidance about using or responding constructively to such criticism.

Post No. 037 - Past writings: The Syncretic Pagan

I have quite a few of my past writings (including automatic writing) that I want to review, as I think it could be useful for others to see how someone else has changed as they evolve. I've done one, which is at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/08/colour-healing-example-of-my-early.html.

I also want to write a review of Richard Rudgely's "Pagan Resurrection" (pub. Century, 2006, ISBN 0 7126 8096 9 and 97870712680967 -I don't know why there are two ISBNs), which is - to simplify - about the rebirth of Odin as a viable, active influence. I like the book, in part, because it doesn't gloss over past "evils", such as the twisted use of psychic material by the the extreme right wing party of 1930s and 40s Germany * (who have, unfortunately, rendered an originally Hindu symbol useless, even though they used a "crooked", or tilted, version of that [see here]), and because it also talks about the "flaws" of Odin's influence (being the potential for mental problems).

For today, however, I just want to review a past article I wrote for the Witches Voice website, called "The Syncretic Pagan", which I wrote during my early explorations of paganism in response to an invitation from Witchvox for articles on syncretism in paganism. I was pleasantly surprised when the article was published, and the link to it is http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=&c=words&id=8185.

I won't republish the article here, out of respect for the Witches Voice website.
PS (2023) - now that Witchvox has collapsed, the article is not available at that link. I'll see if I have or can get a copy to re-post here.

In the article, I haven't directly answered the question which was posed by the Witches Voice (i.e., should paganism be syncretic). I've taken a broader perspective, and asked should the broader world be syncretic (inclusive) of paganism. Then I've moved to the topic of being open to growth, and the difference between individuals being syncretic, and pathways being syncretic.

Overall, I'm quite happy with the article, and it is one of the few pieces of my past writing that I wouldn't change - even though I have more experience (particularly formal experience) of paganism now.

Post No. 036 - Time waves

One of the theories/channelled wisdom we came up when I was learning in the 1980swas that events causes waves through time, much as a pebble dropped into a pond causes waves to spread out in all directions. in much the same way that, if the pebble is actually a stone, it will create bigger waves than a true pebble, events which cause a bigger response (good as well as bad) will cause a bigger ripple through time.

The significance of that was that, when using divination, the intensity of a foretold event wouldn't just constantly get stronger as one approached it: there would periods of more, and then less intensity, with the peaks getting much stronger as one got closer to the event.

Thinking about this now, perhaps it also means the troughs would be more pronounced, meaning those who liked calm/wanted to deny coming trouble could latch on to those troughs and get through the overwhelming peaks by using denial, and those who were inclined towards the alarmist or unduly dramatic would seize on to the peaks and sail screaming maniacally across the troughs. Well, maybe not, but you get the gist of what I am writing about, I hope - and that I am inclined towards the view that balance is a wonderful thing :)

There would presumably also be mutual reinforcement from other events which, in time, were coincident (that's a complicated way of saying "things that occur at the same time" - sorry :) ).

There is an interesting project underway at the hands of scientists (yes, despite my post at http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/flaws-of-scientific-methods.html, they do have their uses :) ) called the "Global Consciousness Project", where random number generators are looking at the possible existence of subtle interconnections by an increase in activity (my words - see http://noosphere.princeton.edu/index.html for "proper" details). Apparently this project has shown some sort of activity is going on around major events. It would be interesting to see if they could identify these waves before events (I suspect not, at this stage, but that may yet happen).

Anyway, I will leave this brief post at that. I hope you have some useful contemplation with respect to any divination you may do :)

If you'd like another, very interesting point of view on this topic, have a look at http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=gtxx&c=words&id=12090. (Also, lots of the Seth/Jane Roberts material [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Roberts] could be of interest.)

Post No. 035 - Evil [Content Warning - discussion on Evil, including Bigotry/Discrimination, and Harm]

I’m a little off colour – I don’t need any healing, just a chance to slow down for a day, and that’s what I’m doing. And I’m watching a film, and enjoying doing so – and letting my mind drift, as it does under such circumstances.

One of the things which comes out of this viewing for me is how easy it is in films to pick out and fight what is “evil”. Sure, there’s the major theme of some film characters being “prophets without honour”, and cover ups, but the actions some characters take are clearly “harmful”, “evil”, “destructive” (whatever label you wish to use).

In the real world, the office bully, the bigot who’s bigotry manifests against someone lacking in social power or influence (e.g., women, a member of a minority ethnic or religious group, a lesbian or a trans person in an office) or the small-minded person who tries to force others to live in ways the small-minded person considers “traditional” etc – THESE are the people who are doing evil. THESE are the people who are ACTIVELY creating and using energy and spells (no matter that they may not know they are doing so, or not be aware consciously of magic or nonphysical energy – or even consciously oppose magic etc) to do harm. The harm they are doing is to the individuals they are targeting, and to other sentient life (by creating fear, the feelings that go with being on the end of discrimination, by harming “group souls” ** through harming one of that group soul’s members, and by slowing, harming or reversing evolution/growth generally [if you want an example of this, look at the discussion about social conflict in the 1960s at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8-Circuit_Model_of_Consciousness***), and to this planet that we live on and should revere (by creating harmful energies and slowing, harming or reversing evolution/growth generally – and that makes the chances of doing something constructive about problems such as global warming MUCH harder).

It’s far less spectacular proposition than the sort of struggle in many films, but what the world needs is just as determined a campaign against the everyday harm bringer, such as the office bully etc. It is also worth keeping in mind that such people are connected together through means they are unaware of – group minds, the collective unconscious, unconscious psychic connections to the like minded, and so forth.

Of course, all those connections are available to those who would like to make the world a more GENUINELY caring, loving, tolerant, inclusive place – AND we have the advantage of consciously being aware of all this, and predisposed towards developing and using such abilities in accordance with moral codes such as the Wiccan Rede (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiccan_Rede), the Golden Rule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity), etc. When I use Rampa’s alternate nostril breathing or any of the other techniques for developing my psychic and/or spiritual abilities, or stand up to the office bully, or campaign for human rights, I am actively working to improve this world on many levels. (I sometimes have to remind myself of this, as when I am struggling against yet another bigot or bully, it would be so much easier to just go round the problem: but that leaves them to potentially harm others.)

As Gandhi said, be the change you wish to see.

Given that I started this while watching a film (which I’m still fitting in! Ah, the joys of being able to do two things at once, eh?), let’s consider a typical day. I would start that day with some of the prayers for protection I mentioned in http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/11/protection.html, including specific mention of protection at work. When I get to work, I will “flame” (visualise heat and light cleansing my aura and my environment), check for any obvious problems (there are always some psychic problems because of the levels of stress we work under – and even the boredom some of the junior engineers there experience until they have work can be a problem), and I might even try some energy work on problem people to remove energies/things (I use the generic term “unit”) they are using against others, then neutralise those units, and then some of the conventional clearing techniques I have written about in http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/workshop-on-past-lives-part-1-working.html and http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/workshop-on-past-lives-part-2.html (these posts include flaming, grounding and protection). I am also considering working out a way to confirm who I need to be careful of (beyond just using my normal sensing); I also use Welsh when working with magic – see http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/06/corrected-druid-invocationdevocation.html).

Now, a few cautions: read http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/11/emotions-and-spellcraft.html, http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/11/families-funerals-and-bev-brock.html, http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/judging-others.html, http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/them-and-us.html and http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/anger-is-noit-emotion.html before you try any of this. You need to be VERY sure that you are not the problem owing to your own lack of perspective or personal problems (such as discomfort with your own shadow self). Some of the personal mental/emotional torments that film characters experiences are exactly the sort of thing which can and does happen at the psychic hands of those who wish the sort of evil I am writing about in this article.

Be safe and balanced as a sentient being, but, I repeat, be the change you wish to see. Don't let bullies and their ilk win: it harms other people, and this planet which is our beautiful, underappreciated home.

Love, light, hugs and blessings

This post's photo is from Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve, near Frankston (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langwarrin). This was established as a military training reserve at the time of the British Empire's war in the Sudan in the 1880s, was used for training in the Boer War and then was converted to a hospital/recovery base for soldiers in the First World War. In the last part of the 20th Century (about 1970s, I think) it was converted to a Flora and Fauna reserve.

*** Just in case this is changed in future edits, the article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8-Circuit_Model_of_Consciousness discusses "The 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness is a model of consciousness proposed by psychologist Timothy Leary. Leary believed the mind is best viewed as a collection of 8 "circuits", also called "gears" or "mini-brains". Each stage is claimed to represent a higher stage of evolution than the one before it.".
The discussion I reference is:
"Leary claims that this model explained, among other things, the social conflict in the 1960s, where the mainstream, said to be those with circuit 4 active and characterized as tribal moralists by Leary, clashed with the counter-culturists, said to be those with circuit 5 active and characterized as individualists and hedonists."
Quotations are as at Friday 25th January, 2008

Post No. 034 - Doing things differently [Content Warning: automatic/unconscious biases are criticised]

Something I have never had much time for is following stupid restrictions - there are a lot of good rules and conditions that I DO follow, such as speed limits. However, others, such as always doing things in certain directions prescribed by others I don't necessarily follow: I will think about the matter, and judge it on it's merits. I don't just do something simply because book such-and-such, or alleged authority so-and-so, say so.

I sincerely hope everyone reading this blog has the same attitude.

In my life, probably one of the first areas this showed was in the topic of associating elements with particular directions. In my initial workings, I genuinely could not feel any reason to associate a particular direction with an element. Now, a couple of decades later, one of my teachers has made the comment "where does a radio receiver have to be placed to work?" Well, calling in the elements is a bit like tuning a receiver; DOES it matter where it sits in the room?
The answer is basically no, not as far as the energy is concerned. The significance is in the mind of the beholder.
When I was learning, I worked out my own method of working where I called the four elements plus spirit from each quarter (by drawing a pentagram and calling one for each point). Is that less valid than the other, more traditional systems of calling one element from each quarter? No.

It has the disadvantage of not connecting to the energies that traditions have built up over thousands of years of workings, but if that grates with whoever is doing the working, that discomfort FAR outweighs the advantages of connecting to a tradition. (As far as connecting to "built up energies" go, there's quite a bit of energy/thought form being developed around some film spells through sheer volume of [almost completely undirected] thought-energy: are you connecting to that?)

If someone has been taught to use a particular form of working (e.g., doing invocation counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere to follow the Sun) and is set on that method, there is no point in trying to change it. However, that does not mean the preferred method is more valid.

I personally get annoyed when people in the Northern Hemisphere make no allowance for the difference of seasons and direction of the Sun in the Southern Hemisphere, and will dig my toes in on doing things to match the southern seasons to make a point against "Northern cultural imperialism". (I almost wrote "comrade" ... and when staff in Australia Post offices try to use American spelling on money orders ... !)

However, if I am doing a working for myself, the direction I work with respect to things like direction of invocation, I am likely to tie that to the (desired) directions of spin of chakras that I am working with (which also means I will devoke in the same direction, to keep the desired direction of spin going; ironically, that often means invoking in a clockwise direction [as per common Northern Hemisphere practice] and devoking in a clockwise direction [as per common Southern Hemisphere practice] to connect to both spirit and earth).

I do things as best suits me (keeping in mind the Rede "an' it harms none, do as ye will" [and countless other variations of wording]). I'm very wary believing there is one "perfect" way to do something: in the real world, "perfect" is a word in the dictionary.

May the Goddess bless you in your search for your perfections.

Post No. 032 - Response to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto [Content Warning: political violence, anger, emotions, interpersonal interactions, judging others, life lessons, lifestyles, stress, control]

There are places on this earth which have the misfortune to be critical to what is happening in this world. These are places, as opposed to people, experiencing the old (apparently Chinese) curse "may you live in interesting times"...

As a digression, if you're young, you may find that sentiment strange, as excitement and stimulation are a part of the culture of the young (and young at heart), and ALWAYS have been. That's one form of "interesting": there are others, with a sense of understatement and/or irony.

As an example, I have spent most of my life with the threat of a nuclear war coming out of the tension between the USA and the USSR. During that time, Cuba had a time when it was the centre of the world's political focus(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_missile_crisis); later on, the tensions in the Middle East (still ongoing - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conflicts_in_the_Middle_East) have threatened, at times, to trigger conflicts which could escalate into larger conflicts. On that point, don't forget that World One, and hence World War Two, were effectively triggered (not caused - the causes include empire aspirations, secret treaties, etc) by an assassination in the Balkans, which we knew until recently as Yugoslavia, and now has split, after a vicious war, into a number of nations.

Now, at the risk of boring those of you who have little or no interest in politics, I have a bit of background to present before I get into the spells and magical response to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Stick with it: you may actually find that what happens overseas is actually quite relevant to wherever you live (I'm in Australia).

Since 2001, one of the major sources of international political concern has been terrorism - and that concern has led to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq (let me say I consider the invasion of Iraq to be "flawed", but the invasion of Afghanistan to remove the Taliban was, in my opinion, justifiable - just also a bit flawed in its execution), and the placing of considerable international (political) pressure on nations such as Pakistan and Indonesia.

Pakistan, obviously, is the country I wish to touch on in this post (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan for some general information). Politically speaking, it is probably fair to say that Pakistan is a flawed ally in the so-called "war on terror": the desire to be - or to be seen as - an ally of Western powers such as the USA and Britain is fairly prominent at higher social levels; at lower levels of social power, I have the impression that there is a fair amount of support for resisting what is seen as Western cultural imperialism, or simply for maintaining the old, tribal ways - hence, the trouble stamping out support for terrorism (such as the cross-border support for the insurgency in Iraq). Consequently, there is a fair bit of internal conflict/tension, and the current military dictatorship (what's that? you didn't know Pakistan wasn't a democracy? Oh, OK - maybe have a look at the comments about suspension of the constitution at https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/pk.html [yes folks, that IS at the CIA's website) is a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Elections are scheduled for early January (the 8th, I think), and these would be significant step towards reestablishing a democracy, hopefully a stable one, which would hopefully be inherently fair for all it's people and thus resistant to terrorist influences. With the assassination of Benazir Bhutto a few days ago, those elections are looking decidedly unlikely - Bhutto's party has pulled out, as has the other opposition party.

Worse than that, there have been riots and more people have died.

This situation is dire - not only for those who live in Pakistan, but also other nations in the world. If the nation slips into civil war, or otherwise fails as a nation, I could see the USA trying to become directly involved, which will further alienate other Muslim nations (SERIOUSLY alienate). At the least, this will harm actions against terrorism (although I think a change of President of the USA will improve actions against terrorism, and other aspects of that dominant global power on the world - incidentally, have a look at Jeff Lily's post http://druidjournal.net/2007/12/18/vaster-than-empires-and-more-slow/); at the worst, it could stress the existing tensions in the Middle East and lead to a larger conflict. (It may also increase oil prices, but I sincerely hope you are not motivated by such selfishness.)

Hence, apart from the direct suffering of those in Pakistan, I consider there are other, pragmatic reasons we should be concerned about what is happening in Pakistan.

I personally have commenced (psychic) work to try to calm the area - to channel the outrage into constructive actions, to stop the presumptions that certain parties are involved (either directly or through not taking inaction), and to stimulate whatever will lead to a healthier society there. I'm mainly using runic energies (Isa for calm, Peorth for truth and Dagaz for transformation), but you could also use Goddess energies (such as Durga to reinforce healthy boundaries, Ceridwen for wisdom, etc).

There is something else you can do: be the change you wish to see (which is, I understand, a Mohandas K. Gandhi [also known as the Mahatma, or Great Soul] quote).

In what areas of your life are you presuming blame should be attributed, or reacting with rage and/or anger (see my post http://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2007/10/anger-is-noit-emotion.html), or contributing to a situation which is not beneficial to those in it?

If you genuinely wish to work in the best interests of the people of Pakistan, fix yourself so you remove those energies from the world in general and the current troubles in Pakistan in particular (it doesn't matter that the energies are distant: they are available to be drawn on by those - physical and nonphysical - who wish to foment trouble in Pakistan.

If you are prepared to attempt that change in yourself, which would involve consulting with your Higher Self/guides by meditation, and taking whatever action comes from that (such as affirmations to change long set habits of thought or reaction), you are the sort of person I would be interested in for my future internet based group, the Grove of Ghyldeptis.

Anyway, it is late, and I must get some sleep, so I will leave this at that,

Love, light, hugs and blessings
Gnwmythr

I will add a photo to this post later.
