Post No. 2,511 - Immaturity in practicing religion of all forms, and Harpocrates

Something that struck me when reading some social media posts on witchcraft/witches recently is that the old trope about witches pushing boundaries is still around - i.e., you're not really a witch unless you are - to paraphrase - shocking people.

How puerile.

All religions are meant to be about change for the better - including challenging existing norms when those genuinely require it. However, there is a problem to be wary of in that:

what if the existing norms are good?

What if the world was transformed to what those who wrote the posts wanted - would they still want witches to challenge everything?

The bigger problem than that, however, is that the people advocating for their addiction to childishly shocking others are often, from their posts, missing what is needed to change the world:

challenging unearned advantage (aka privilege), getting rid of patriarchy and the millennia of damage it has caused (incluing to men), changing or getting rid of the current capitalistic greed driven economic systems, and taking real and effective action on the existential threats of the climate crisis and nuclear weapons

Another little comment: while doing some psychic work recently, the word “harpocretes” popped into my mind. I did some research and found that was probably meant to be Harpocrates, the Ancient Greek Deity of Silence (this is not the first time Ive received words that only made sense later). As I was considering whether to write to someone about a matter, I got the point, and held my peace.

In one of T. Thorn Coyles books she discusses the symbolism of a magical creature and the formula it represents for magic (To Know, To Dare, To Will, To Keep Silent): the fourth point is "to hold silence".

I think I understand that better now.

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”
  • I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
