Post No. 3,204 - Personal update and ... choosing better politicians

I have had some good things happening, but to put them in context, I need to first note that I have, in general, overdone the extent of support I give others - I don’t regret others getting the help, but the price paid by me (including in terms of personal health) has been significant - including with regard to the psychic work I have done.

My main problem has been too much empathy.

There have been others advocating for me to do less, but as those people were mostly extremely selfish IPOCs who lacked all credibility, I ignored them - and would again, if I had this life over.

If, on the other hand, rather than saying well Im sorry, of course (which was usually a blatant, performative lie) “but one has to ...”, they had been saying things like “I have found when my energy is low, I can direct them to help from _, then I would have found them credible ( they were referring to personal experience, had none of the tough love / have-to-be-hard psychopathic rubbish, and provided a realistic, viable option) and likely would have followed - or at least tried - their solution.

As it is, my personal circumstances are worse than I would like - especially my health. I cannot undo what I have done, and, despite wanting to slow down and take life a bit easier, realistically I probably have another decade or so of work to do - the need exists, the response so far by the rest of the world is not adequately addressing the needs I see, and I can make a contribution towards (but NOT do entirely) addressing those needs, so, irrespective of my mistakes to date, I must, IMO, act.

Today, however, I had an assessment for aged care help, and am likely to get some help with things like housework.

That was a major experience for me: after decades of abuse from bigotted bureaucrats, I found people who were pleasant and helpful, and, after around half a century (after I moved out from my adoptive family’s home) of doing whatever I needed mostly by myself (with some notable, still continuing support from my former partner and friends), I am (probably) going to get some help.

It's like driving on a rough road in the fog, thinking the road is going to lead to a cliff or similar, when the fog clears and the road becomes a smooth highway ...

There is some psychological adjustment required as the sense of wonder clears ...   and I have not forgotten many people in the world cannot access such help.

And that leads in to what is actually the main point of this post:

choosing better politicians

As a first point, that isn’t always possible - not all nations are democracies, and many aren't even partial democracies: I’m not going to address those nations in this post (but the work of this blog should be used to help improve those situations and move them towards democracy ... and improve all democracies as well), and will limit myself to nations that have reasonably genuine elections.

In those nations, I have watched too many politicians flounder on taking firm action on the climate crisis and other human rights issues.

Part of that problem is lack of knowledge/comfort with those issues (which can be addressed by educating them), and another key part of the problem is getting elected/re-elected.

The latter leads to some politicians juggling what they think is needed to get elected/re-elected, and those decisions are based to quite an extent on the noise they get.

If they “hear” fossils (fossil fuel companies) being loud, possibly with money, and either nothing (because of amathiac cynicism) or just a few angry rants on the other side, they will likely choose the side of the fossils - and it doesn’t matter what cognitive dissonances they have used, the fact is we just lost an elected representative.

What is needed is more effective advocacy which includes encouraging small steps towards doing what is in the best interest of decency, the human species, and all life on this planet.

MPs are human: be a light of relief and gentle pressure in an ocean of anger and bullying, and be in this for the long game - build a relationship so they (or, more accurately, their staff) do not cringe when they see your email in their inbox, and they'll be in a better frame of mind when you do have to push for something they don’t like.

There is a further complication to this, which is the role of political parties. For those, I suggest joining and getting involved and being active - especially on their membership policy committees.

That also is a long term exercise ...

PS - also consider this:   “History Tells Us How the Ukraine War Could End (it's worse than you think)”   https://youtu.be/nDqn27gl2vg   An excellent consideration of history and psychopathy, and human failings when facing psychopaths

Remember: we generally need to be more human being rather than human doing, to mind our Mӕgan, and to acknowledge that all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptor to prevent “othering” (just as binary gendered [men’s and women’s] sporting teams are either both given the gender descriptor, or neither).
