Post No. 2,946 - Reflections on the past week, and some interesting reading/viewing [Note: Content Warning - links to reports on oppression/bigotry/hate, violence/abuse/war. Reader discretion is advised]

Note: CONTENT WARNING - some of this content is about upsetting, disturbing or triggering events & attitudes. Seek competent help - including professional - if you need it. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that linked articles may contains names and/or images of deceased people. READER CAUTION IS RECOMMENDED! For anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as mental health support - <your nation>(which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/

I am going to begin this week’s reflection by noting a report that “Almost 1,500 people are dying in homelessness every year, with new research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showing a 63% surge in preventable deaths”, which is an appalling indictment of a supposedly civilised society - and problems such as our massive growth in greed and landlordism ...

And the problems of racism and domestic violence continue ...  including   this example of racism in parenting used by Denmark & similar in the ACT,   Qld shutting down truth telling,   and   racism & bullying severe enough in the USA to cause a suicide attempt

At least the South Australian Voice is underway ...   and key First Nations groups have welcomed a parliamentary report's vision for Indigenous economic empowerment    (South Australia has also banned political donations and gifts to MPs, but critics have raised concerns that the process was rushed and that the legislation is compromised and unfair);   also Australia has an anti-racism plan - although some refugees wish they had never come,   and   the stolen wages case from WA, dating back to the 1930s, has ended with an order for compensation.

Extremism experts have described infiltrating the Tr_ mp  2.Ø cult - which shows the close alliance between toxic masculinity (i.e., male dominance and female subservience) and fascism (and also note this warning against the “strongman” fantasy, and that “‘woke’ didn’t lose the US election: the patrician class who hijacked identity politics did) - as part of US  veterans  movements  work to counter extremist groups attempts at recruiting ex-military members - and, incidentally, also providing good advice on “What To Do When Fascist Street Gangs Show Up”.   And Europe is starting to stand on their own two feet as well.

And on extremists, Putin has claimed a right to attack nations whose weapons Ukraine uses to attack Russia (although he trying to deny Ukrainians power/heating during the cold European winter). This is concerning, and in line with his history - on which it should be noted Putin has a history of following through on what he says he will do. As with the sort of autocrat written about in Anne Applebaum’s Autocracy, Inc.” [Penguin, 2024, ISBN 978-1-802-06213-7; Penguin, Kobo, Apple Books, Amazon]), it is probably  a fair call to argue that Putin cares more  about power than Russia - and, on that, I note Timothy Snyder's comment In the Russo-Ukrainian war, an much smaller apolitical mixed-gender army, the Ukrainian one, has held back a much larger, politicized, patriarchal, anti-woke, anti-gay, and anti-transsexual army, the Russian one (also of interest is “Women have fought and killed men in combat throughout history, as customs and technology permitted.  It is a modern prejudice to deny this.  ... our source on Sparta, Herodotus, reminds us that the greatest warriors of the age, famously undefeated by Persia, were the Scythians.  And the Scythians did have female warriors, cavalry armed with recursive bows.  Custom and technology permitted them to fight, and they did.  Judging by the archaeological finds in today's southern Ukraine, about one in five Scythian warriors was female.  It took a while for archaeologists to realize this, because of the male-ego-preserving prejudice that all warriors are male.  It was only the DNA evidence -- nature, as it were -- that forced the conclusion that was in fact obvious from the female skeletal remains.”)   Others are also commenting on the importance of standing with trans people.   I also note a former US Army officer has said “The Russians know they cannot win this war unless the West quits”,   this expert also advises that Ukraine is holding back a possible third world war by resisting Putin,   and that it is Russia that is escalating the war in Ukraine (and I note Germany is preparing bunkers ...) - including using US stooges on social media to repeat Russian propaganda.   And Russia is suffering from chronic inflation ...

After an intensification of fighting, and some initial continuation, a USA and France  mediated permanent  ceasefirebetween Israel and Lebanon, based on further implementation of the partially implemented UN Security Council Resolution  1701 (2006) started to take effect - although  60 days are planned for its implementation ... and appears to be holding - although H_______h are “keeping their fingers on the trigger” , both sides have accused each other of violations, and ceasefires don’t always work ...   Some displaced people are returning to their homes already, contrary to advice. This ceasefire will NOT help what is happening in Gaza - in fact, it makes peace LESS likely.

In Israel, a government Minister has claimed a right to commit regime change (including getting of judicial bodies!) inside Israel, and an untranslated speech by Netanyahu is claimed to be ‘a declaration of war directed inside Israel’.   In what might be an example of that, following reports that the publisher of a leftist newspaper that I have often admired and respected had grossly misdescribed H___s as freedom fighters (which, if true, conflated the valid need for an independent modern nation-state Palestine with the t_r_rr_sm unleashed last year ... and recall that the initial list of warrants requested by the ICC included three people from H___s but two from Israel) the Israeli government imposed sanctions on and isolation of that paper - BUT that publisher had subsequently clarified that he was NOT referring to or including H___s. (This also illustrates the point I was writing about here.)

On wording and extremism, Australia’s official definition of ‘t_rr_r_sm’ will be reviewed for the first time since September 11 attacks.

Also in Australia, an extremely concerning privacy breach in the ‘leads list’ of a property development course shows, IMO, contempt for Australians and Australian laws,   and   the national ALP government has dumped the proposed misinformation bill in the face of united Senate opposition - and there will also not be any gambling ad ban legislation in the last sitting week of the year.   The social media ban for young people (to come into effect in 12 months time - somehow [details are still lacking] - and to world bemusement/bewilderment) has run in to concerns about   the impact of losing games on social lives,   changes of position by MPs,   potential unintended consequences and the lack of a proper Senate inquiry into the world-first legislation (raised by conservatives, which is a good example of what conservatives can and should do - be a balance for risky change),   likely failure on proportionality,   suggestions that educating young people about social media (as done by Finland) would be far more effective than a ban, and, for my part, a study I linked to previously which discusses evidence of harm (and there is also evidence of desensitisation to violence) has a major flaw in that it is silent about the need to prepare young adults for the broader political real world - yes, body image and mental health concerns are valid, but anxiety may actually be a valid response to things like the climate crisis, and to try to cotton wool teenagers about such issues is paternalistic, condescending, and staggeringly harmful to them AND THE WORLD (Greta is an example of the world benefits when they are NOT molly coddled).   Also on tech issues, businesses, which have been grossly incompetent in their “management” of passwords (and e-signatures, acceptance of duty of care, forethought, etc) - and individuals also have flaws in this area, are failing to recognise that “better security methods” can also be hacked too, and they have to manage risk “while reaping rewards”.   and, on security, gambling addicts are putting themselves (and possibly those close to them) at risk by selling their IDs, and other Aussies are running into ID and related problems overseas. On climate issues, a survey found “seventy per cent of regional Australians in renewable energy zones support the development of renewable energy projects on local farmland”.

Concerningly, as there would seem to be some basis for the claim, the conservative opposition has claimed it is running the national immigration policy ...

Governance in Australia has cropped up this week, with a commentator edging towards accepting the benefits of minority governments, which has been well exemplified by the  minority  national  Gillard and the state  Bracks (the comment about criticism of consultation is typical of the outdated, authoritarian social dinosaurs I am criticising) governments and others overseas.   As the chair of the ABC admits to the harm done by years of funding cuts by conservatives, those who unable to change for the better are reacting badly to Australia’s new Future Fund mandate.   (To digress to change on the international scene, the UK is undertaking what is, in effect a partial trial into UBI, by providing homeless people with cash to see if that reduces poverty.)   Action is also being undertaken to try to acheive change for the better, including in Parliament and with regard to domestic violence (and see also this, in France) - including providing safe homes for Aboriginal women.   On the other hand, the social dinosaurs are regressing decades to an outdated truancy policy, and professional sport is floundering with the cultural changes to improve inclusivity of Indigenous players and how to avoid abusive training environments.

And absolutely gut wrenching - especially on top of the oppositions claim in a preceding paragraph and the abandonment of a plan (according to a The Guardian exclusive) to more fairly tax rich people’s super and the torturous abuse of refugees/asylum seekers that is detested by so many in the ALP, is the ethically questionable  interference by the WA (ALP) Premier to the (ALP) Prime Minister to end a successfully finalised (according to a The Guardian exclusive) negotiation between the ALPs Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek (how much better off we would be is she had been PM rather than Albanese!) and the Greens

Also, disturbing news that a judge in my home state has found that police “engaged in ‘joint criminal enterprise’ with Lawyer X” to “take down” a criminal figure.  And as a police officer is found guilty of manslaughter of an elderly woman,  a NSW police officer is jailed is for using his position to abuse a teenage complainant,  and   a UK court case against appalling conduct by undercover police continues, another judge has been urged “not to ‘sugarcoat’ police officer’s actions” (his “ego “had a lot to do with” the death of _, and the former police officer “invented” evidence about the Warlpiri man attempting to take his gun before the fatal shooting, a court has heard” ... and he apparently had a “fascination” with violence and NT police say it is ‘absolutely undeniable’ that he is a racist [note this is an inquest, and I understand the former police officer's lawyer has commented about points such as others also being racist] )

And, in shades of the infamous  Bjelke-Petersen  regime, Queensland is proposing to give ten year old children life sentences ...

And, moving from national to international justice, we - despite the genuine good intentions of our Climate  Minister - are not doing our fair share of addressing the $1 trillion funding shortfall to enable low and middle income nations to prepare for the climate crisis, and are compounding problems by allowing extended gas exports ...

In other international news,   concerns that Sudan may become a failed state - and hundreds of thousands of lives are at risk,   there is widespread restriction of freedom of the press in Afghanistan,   the ICC prosecutor has asked for a warrant  for  the  arrest of the head of the Myanmar/Burma junta, and this analysis shows those nations which have indicated they would enforce the current warrants relating to the war in Gaza and the atrocity which triggered that,   the importance of speaking up about atrocities as silence is complicity,   Canada is planning its defence and possible retaliation against Tr_ mps planned tariff attack,   and   a paradox from Colombia, where successful peace efforts have allowed some armed groups to become stronger.

Finally this assessment of the failure of a recent general strike in Greece (“Margaret Thatcher was right that a combination of austerity and the financialisation of working-class housing (through the sale of council houses) is the perfect poison for the trade union movement”) is useful and informative, and this call for insurance companies to disclose their premium calculations might or might not be useful - particularly those facing ‘the brunt of climate-driven disasters’.

Where does all this leave the world? In desperate need of the sort of physical and non-physical action that so many are fired up and doing now in so many places, arenas of action, and ways - including, in terms of nonphysical action, the work of this blog (and I am very pleased that the majority of my readers are from nations that are not English speaking - including a number from Ukraine)

On the resistance to the reign of Tr_ mp 2.Ø:

  • “MAGA Bathroom Bullies SHUT DOWN by Their Targets”   https://youtu.be/5WcQFDVDRlE   Excellent analysis and commentary in this - I particularly liked the warning that authoritarians build their control from the vulnerable to others, and the information on overestimation my majority groups of the numbers/proportions of minority groups
  • “So...I've been getting death threats after the election”   https://youtu.be/sklog5k6cfI   This is extremely concerning, and I urge everyone to take basic and any other appropriate precautions for their safety - including psychic protection, but also note the mix that includes physical world measures in “Blackthorn's Protection Magic: A Witch's Guide to Mental and Physical Self-Defense”   by Amy Blackthorn   (pub. Weiser, 2022; ISBN 978-1-57863-761-4;   reviews by John Beckett and goodreads;   purchase   Red Wheel / Weiser,   Kobo,   Apple Books,   Amazon). • [Content Warning - language after the included quote]   “Country Music Star Puts M_g_ ON BLAST At Show”   https://youtu.be/4IJSo0HHJVY&t=65   “I think that this toxic, patriarchal energy we’re experiencing right now, this is an age coming to an end  And what we’re seeing is that energy clinging and clawing for its survival because it knows it’s dying.  And we’re heading towards something very beautiful, and we’ve just got to go through some dark shit first to get there, okay?  Love everybody around you.  Don’t accept anything other than that.

Here are some llinks that might of interest or value:

  • “The Impact Of Native Mascots | Learn Something New”   https://youtu.be/waQv5KR1wIw   This is excellent - includes reference to evidence and is nuanced
  • [Content Warning - mention of a transphobe]   “THE LIGHT GATE - Mike Clelland - UFOs, Owls & the Paranormal Connection”   https://www.youtube.com/live/CHpd0vAy58A   This guest is always - in my experience/opinion - interesting.   Following up on some of the comments made during this episode:   the suggestion for more communication amongst UFO researchers is good - and, in fact, is something that is needed in many fields. The internet is a logical choice for that, but has failed due to malign influences such as the commercialisation/commodification of the Internet, and the social media type effect of sinking to the lowest common denominator;   in response to the call for people to be more open: my first contact was as a teenager in the 70s in a little country town in central Queensland (the old idea of central Qld - not the modern nonsense). One night I went outside to look at the stars - which was something I loved doing (I even had the windows of my bedroom, a converted [closed in] verandah, oriented so I could see the maximum amount of night sky) when I became aware I “had” to turn round: when I did, I saw a small bright red light several km to the north and which, as soon as I had seen it, accelerated vertically until it disappeared - faster than anything I have ever seen. This means that contact included:  considerable planning and coordination,  guidance (to get me to go outside, and then to turn around),  telepathic communication - both to get me to turn around, and to confirm that I had seen what I was supposed to,  and  use of physical technology to create unmistakeable visual evidence. That was before known public investigation (in that tiny town), so it also resulted in no undue attention for me;   the discussion on communication with nature is good;   the widespread presence of owls is oversold (and I am glad they later also included culture which see owls as warnings/omens);   and avoid psychedelics!
  • “Reflections after 16.000 NM of Solo Sailing around the World in 15 months - Ep. 217”   https://youtu.be/tU2NSinBwjg   These reflections were quite good, IMO
  • “The Law of Cats - Jon O'Sullivan - Irish Pagan School”   https://youtu.be/rZ05ygfaYvI   Interesting - I did not know that

Remember: we generally need to be more human being rather than human doing, to mind our Mӕgan, and to acknowledge that all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptor to prevent “othering” (just as binary gendered [men’s and women’s] sporting teams are either both given the gender descriptor, or neither).
