Post No. 3,362 - My next SubStack newsletter, and some reading

I have got my fourth SubStack newsletter out this morning, and I feel like I'm finally starting to get the hang of that.

In reflecting on the writing skills of others on SubStack, I grapple with my cautious approach – which has been shaped by experiences in a conservative profession and as a community activist. Life limitations, including family health matters and past trauma, have led to actions such as disabling comments on my blog to avoid abuse and manage time. I contrast my struggle with Centrelink and the challenges of personal trauma to others who seem unaffected by life's adversities, and acknowledge my need for self-acceptance and recognition of my life experiences, particularly after being a driven over-achiever. The discussion touches on themes of writing, life challenges, and personal growth.
I also detail some current projects: advising for recording setup to commence spiritual interviews, significant progress on lived experience presentations, including completed work on autism and drafts on LGBTQIASB+ and Paganism; my plans to offer courses on Udemy, starting with a dowsing course, contingent on the required audio setup; additionally, I intend to issue more ISBN copies of my writing on Patreon, but need a PO Box, but getting that is complicated by my trauma around bureaucracy and financial issues. I am also working on large courses focusing on psychic/spiritual development and my autobiography, which will include stories assisting a young friend in Africa during the COVID lockdowns – which I will publish in these newsletters as they are suitably edited (the first of these stories, on starting at Uni in Queensland in the 1970s, is included in the current newsletter).
I also look at 2026: difficult living conditions will persist in various regions, particularly in parts of Africa facing war and governance challenges. Australia’s corporate media will likely focus primarily on the USA, Ukraine, and Israel-Gaza, neglecting broader global issues. Those with personal resources will navigate challenges better than those without, which is a situation exacerbated by half a century of destructive, anti-community, anti-person neoliberal policies. The Australian ALP government will face internal and external pressures to improve its response to these crises. However, overall I consider resistance to global issues will strengthen despite worsening conditions.

I also thought this video is worth a watch:
  • “2026 Financial Reckoning | What They're Not Telling You”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e7B5NBRZw8   “2025 was a disastrous year — economically, politically and morally.   But the consequences of that failure are only just beginning to arrive.   In this video, I ask a simple but uncomfortable question: who is going to pay the price in 2026?   Austerity by design is still with us. Fiscal rules are still being used to override human need. Markets are still prioritised over care. And the result is that credibility is draining from politics across the UK and beyond.   I look at who is likely to fall from power — in the UK, in the US, and internationally — and why neoliberal authority is finally collapsing under the weight of its own failures. I also ask whether anyone might emerge with a credible alternative, and what that would require in economic terms.   2026 will not be an easy year. But it may be the year when technocratic politics finally runs out of road.”

Post No. 2,654 - the spiritual bypassing of those who do not spiritually bypass ...

One of the frustrations of the caring duties I have taken on in the last quarter century or so (including activism) is that they have directly and indirectly had major impacts on my health, wellbeing, and functioning. As a result of that, I have been focusing on making short posts, rather than the eloquent missives I wish to.

Sighs eloquently ...

Be that as it may, I have one of those short missives that I wish to migrate from my mental meditations to a mundane world (digital) meandering ...

I have been contemplating the issue of spiritual bypassing

As originally expressed, that concept is a valid concern - that people will (in my words) engage in the deception of being involved in a task for the world that they wrongly consider brooks of no interference to what is satisfying or rewarding,. and thus they avoid any personal growth work, let alone shadow work

However, my experience of those who are concerned about spiritual bypassing is that they can, in turn, be selfish and limited in their perspective - specifically, that they underplay their responsibility for making the world a better place, including mundane world activism for things such as democracy and human rights, and against inequity, injustice, global thirst & hunger, and poverty.

In a word: politics.

They fail to realise that it is the application of spiritual ethics in mundane situations that can be of crucial importance - and is a test of the depth, genuineness and extent of their spirituality ... and in very testing circumstances where success may not occur even if their conduct is impeccable - which is a test of the acceptance of others free will.

From my life experience, I can state that saying a simple “I disagree with you, and consider we should do X” in an ethically contended situation (whether at work, in a social or other small group, family, at a political party branch meeting - or even from those who should  know  better), is infinitely more constructive than a bad tempered going-along-with-something-because-everyone-else-wants-to-and-the-stated-disagreement-will-not-win-then-grumbling-about-how-bad-and-unspiritual-the-world-is-afterwards. It may not win then, but it plants a seed for those coming later who can win such battles.

Of course, doing so requires both courage, genuine commitment to spiritual principles (including being of good character), and the willingness to forego recognition.

I must admit Ive got a little tired and struggle with the last of those after the last half century or so, but that is an issue I am working on.

In the meantime, I can use - and am using - my position as someone who has got through a demanding day job/career and family responsibilities (albeit with more to come), and thus it is harder for those sceptical of spirituality to discount what I am advocating for.

And my advocating is, as I mentioned at the start of this, hindered by the damage caused by my life (including undiagnosed  conditions, and the bigotry I have experienced from the small-minded from the conditions that have been identified and dealt with) - but at least I have made it easier for those who are working now, and those who will come in the future.

But I wish to return to the issue of scale.

When I started my serious and intensive training in the 1980s, the work included both improving oneself and working for a better world. The work was rendered flawed by the anti-human rights, avoid-overt-politics, questionable methods, and normative & neoliberal biases of the teacher, but the individual and global scale were both there.

I have only found the same combination present in one other group (a Wiccan church), but I have not been a member of that group for a long time, and my spiritual practices have diverged to the extent that I would not return there.

All others I have encountered since then tend to be focused on the personal in the sense of growth, on the personal in the sense of spirituality, on the political, or - in fictional renditions - have problems with being violent.

A psychic or spiritual conflict can only be won, ultimately, by being more spiritually loving - which includes being socially progressive and inclusive, and non-violent (except to prevent harm that is being actively done)

But that will involve contests, and that is something I have been trying to get the energy to write about in my Ranger on the Inner Plane series and other related short stories on my creativity blog - and some incipient novels, including about Tara Dale

I have to admit I would love to find some (fiction) books that cover this sort of work on both a global and personal scale and are reasonably realistic, but those that come close are plagued by (often commercially driven) problems such as pandering to neochristianity, including gratuitous (mostly physical) violence, or fail on fundamental issues such as survival after physical death

On that last point, I have always found the early (in terms of story chronological sequence, not date of publication) Star Wars aggravating on that point: I know some traditions do deny the continued existence of individualised consciousness after physical death, but they need to get past their blinkers and examine the work of people like the  Zammits

The very belated acknowledgement of healing in the Star Wars films is another source of the irrits for me, but they finally got there with the last film

I wont deal with those irrits other than to say “humph”, and then have a cuppa and lay down ... 😁 ... and to continue trying to write the sort of fiction I would like to read - and that would have helped me when I was starting on my spiritual path ... at least I dont have to worry about commercial pressures ...

Remember: we generally need to be more human being rather than human doing, to mind our Mӕgan, and to acknowledge that all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk.

Post No. 902 - A Whinge

Well, I've had a week off from work, a chance to fall in a heap and catch my breath, in a sense, after an intense few months, and I've come to a few conclusions.

The first is that I could do with more of a break (and especially a break with less snarkiness about me being off line on the occassional time I checked for any emergencies), but so could many, many, MANY other people - especially the young mothers with too many young kids, carers for people who are ill, those working multiple jobs to make ends meet (which I admit would include me if I could find a 2nd job with suitable hours :/ ), and so on. When I began working, nearly half a century ago, I looked forward to being able to take a decent chunk of leave - my ideal is to take all four weeks in winter, but we have to reserve at lest a week for compulsory leave for the end of the year holiday period (the [neochristian] Christmas-New Year period), which means I would get one week in summer, and only three weeks in my beloved winter.

I haven't been able to do that for a long time, and I've come across many engineers who, through a combination of circumstances, such as changing jobs or working on a contract basis, have been many years without any sort of a break. It is stupid, but then that seems to be what has happened - in fact, many engineers take an almost masochistic pleasure in how self-sacrificing they can be "for the sake of the company". It can be a laudable thing to desire to be of service, but NOT when that is for a commercial organisation which is, in a competitive market, too often inherently benefitting at the expense of others. This has a few problems, such as disguising lack of profitability - many companies, over the last few decades, have seemed to make a profit solely on the basis of the unpaid overtime. When I've commented about that, the response has been to the effect that such is "necessary" in order to compete with other companies - mostly US companies, who are even worse in the way they treat their employees.

Well, it has a few problems, and the lack of adequate down time I've just written is but one of those.

There is a lot more I could write about this (and have in the past - for instance, see here), such as the technical flaws of accelerated construction programmes, the difficulty of attracting engineers when the reality is their future will be trying to get their (badly-defined) utilisation rate over 80% and their profits over X% (I stopped talking to potential engineers some years ago now, for ethical reasons which were basically concerns over what sort of future those young people would have in my industry), etc, but the key point is that quality of life has declined, and the responses to me pointing that out when this was starting and since has been along the lines of "it is necessary" / "we need to do this to compete". Well, the personal and social price I was talking about has arrived, and we DID have other options - we, as a society, could have, for starters, actually have thought about this all.

I suspect the big challenge there is that people don't want to feel that they could miss out - FOMO is not something limited to the Internet age! I'm seeing the downside of that in houses, in particular, and that problem goes back a lot longer because, as I've written about elsewhere (here, for instance), Australians have been building shoddy houses for a long time. Generally, this is described as lower quality ("lower cost") houses for the sake of affordability, but I contend that is lower quality and cost to allow BIGGER houses (in the 1930s, a typical family would be 6 people, with multiple kids to a bedroom and families living in smaller houses than are typically built today), and also just straight out lack of foresight / thinking (such as the failure to provide verandahs on the east, north and west side of Australian houses). Now, some of this is related historically to limits on construction materials: as an example, I recall seeing a television programme once - back in the days when I watched TV! - which described how Victorian wallpaper (the stuff with patterns that so many people make fun of) was actually to cover cracks and other problems associated with building materials and techniques of that time; however, there were better choices available even then - for instance, one of the best houses I have come across is a mud-brick house in central Victoria which is over a century old (it has verandahs on key sides to protect the mud bricks, but those bricks are now very, very solid - our firend said they were like concrete when he made some changes).

This is the only photo I have showing any of that (I generally took photos of the bush on his land when we were there):

If I choose a more recent example, the house we have moved into is very nice in the modern sense - lots of glass windows for light, for instance. However, they're mostly on the south side, so don't get the winter sun and just contribute to the house being colder (which also goes back to glazing choices), the gas heating is in the roof (heat rises: outlets need to be in the floor!), I suspect the insulation is nominal only, and the front door is so loose that it lets in far more wind than we ever had in the place we used to live in - and that was bad enough. If better choices had been made on those aspects, the house would have to have been smaller to be built for the same price - which is a key point I am making: we are trading quality off for quantity, and thinking that, because the house superficially looks more glitzy, we're better off.

And that mistake is being made in many areas of life.

I've also worked out why it is harder to work with energy here:
  1. because we're so much closer to our neighbours - this is on a typical smaller block, with a greater proportion given to house than plants; and
  2. not enough big trees.
We have a ghost gum out the front, but it cannot compare to the combination of sycamore out front and fig tree out back we used to have, and which used to do such a magnificent job of anchoring our energy work. As a society, we need more big old trees - and wild scrub land (and I've just found somewhere close by that is comparable to Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve, from the days when I lived in Frankston). The landlords have tried to get trees established out back but have had problems because of the shallow soil: I have a few ideas for that, but, in the meantime, we may need to do something like put a totem pole out the back.

The other thing I've noticed while on holiday is the dearth of good books - meaning the sort of book I want to read :) I want fiction, not something to study, and there is the Deverry series and, to some extent the Dresden files, but - and this applies to them as well - most of it builds drama around things like war: I would like to read something which wasn't based on physical violence (I often fast forward films past the gratuitous violence - and the violence is often (a) gratuitous, and (b) unrealistic, no matter how grossly it is portrayed, as it fails to have the psychic energy that goes with such events in real life), but had the sort of psychic struggles that I work with. I've started trying to write the sort of fiction I want to read (e.g., see here, here, here, and here), but ... I know what's going to happen, so I'd like to read something along those lines that has been written by others - a bit like the free fiction  T. Thorn Coyle does, for instance, or Dion Fortune's novels, but - and I'm getting picky here! - I want to be able to lay in bed and hold it in my hand, as a hard copy ... so I'll just have to save up stuff and print it out, I guess :)

Anyway, time to think about breakfast.

Post No. 843 - the Weekend

Well, as a result of not having done a Psychic Weather Report this morning, I had the energy to go out today (Sunday) - I'd gone out and about a bit yesterday, as well. I posted at my Musings of Kayleen blog about using "Zen navigation" to find the wonderful Maranoa Gardens yesterday, but there was more to it.

I sometimes also use "Zen navigation" - actually, it's really more a case of following one's intuition / BPM Guidance than the original meaning of Zen navigation, from the Dirk Gently (who is a "holistic detective") novels - to find places or people who need help. Yesterday, for example, before finding the gardens, I spent a fair bit of time driving around side streets of Kew and Balwyn looking for a place where someone needed a boost (the energy that was needed felt - to me - a little like teaching someone how to do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) - or at least making the Sign of the Enterer). Once I felt comfortable that I had done the energy work required (without ever seeing anyone physically), I then felt able to use my adaptation of Zen navigation to find a place for myself. I've done that "drive and find a place that needs energetic help and do the helpin' " a few times (a few times that indicated that people I knew needed help - the reason for which I found out later, so I have had some verification about this).

Today, I decided to go to a "psychic expo". Now, as it turns out, there may have been another festival on today, one that had lectures that I may have been interested in, but:
(a) the event I went to had people I could catch up with who I'd met at other events (although that might have applied at the other event also);
(b) the mother of someone I know was there, and seeing a friendly face gave her the confidence to get a reading;
(c) I came across someone doing rune readings. I didn't have the money to get a reading (move and legal stuff with the estate and so on), but he works occasionally at a place not too far from work if I want to - and I could always see him again at other expos. (The store owner has an inactive blog, but I liked the posts on ethics here and here. There's a bit about the psychic I saw here.) That also was a useful reminder that, at some stage, I should get my book on runes finished: I think the section on micro-runes might be useful;
(d) a woman there had a companion dog which needed a little aware interaction which I was able to provide (I don't consider myself a "dog" person, and I'm definitely not an expert on dogs, but I'm aware, for instance, that dogs - and cats - like to "read" where you've been with their sniffing, so the best thing I could do for this dog was stand quietly and patiently while the lovely old dog enjoyed sniffing and discovering about our pets and where I'd been etc - then I gave pats and skritches where the dog wanted. The dog sense all this potential - we connected from about half across the hall, and his tail was wagging as I walked up. Then again, maybe I just had my "animals and kids" aura on again, as while I was waiting for my lunch meal - see the next dot point - a bunch of kids who were writing down the names of rabbit posters around the place [I suppose some sort of sugar-free Easter or pre-Easter game] they plopped themselves down at my table to catch up with their writing); and
(e) even better than all that (yes, I am being tongue in cheek here), I was able to order a favourite meal off the "Senior's Menu" without any question or quibbling - so my wrinkles have pub cred :)
So ... although I haven't done my main task for today (i.e., the Psychic Weather Report), I have been able to balance some "me" time with doing some work to help others. It was, therefore, a good day.

Please see here, here, here and my post "The Death of Wikipedia" for the reasons I now recommend caution when using Wikipedia. I'm also exploring use of h2g2, although that doesn't appear to be as extensive (h2g2 is intended - rather engagingly - to be the Earth edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy").
[3] I apologise for the formatting: it seems Blogger is no longer as WYSIWYG as it used to be, and there are a lot of unwanted changes to layout made upon publishing, so I often have to edit it immediately after publishing to get the format as close to what I want as possible.

  • If your “gut” (your instinct/intuition) is telling you something is wrong, but logic and the available evidence is saying otherwise, the proper conclusion to draw is that you need better, more personally credible evidence. Your “gut” could be wrong, right, or missing the nuances / “shades of grey” . So could the available evidence.
