- Open AI has rejected a takeover attempt by M_ sk and cronies, as Tesla sales plummet; prosecutors in France have launched an investigation into M_ sk’s social media platform for alleged algorithmic distortions; a warning about America’s tech giants - and Google has been censoring (by removing) any criticism of King Tr_ mp’s attempted and nonsensical renaming of the Gulf of Mexico; Tr_ mp’s DOJ lawyers have been “forced to admit they lied to federal judges in prior proceedings” ... and Tr_ mp’s cabinet nominees keep refusing to say they would not obey an illegal order from Tr_ mp (or, presumably, M_ sk); several US Democratic state attorneys general have warned that the USA is ‘on the brink of a dictatorship’; “the Trump Administration is backing away from a previous promise to only send the “worst of the worst” to Guantanamo Bay, and according to CBS News, has been sending non-violent, low risk undocumented migrants to facilities at Guantanamo Bay during the repatriation process”; an excessively optimistic call for Australia to stand up to Tr_ mp’s “war on international justice”; information on some resisters presented as a “Profiles in Courage” type approach;
- an explanation as to why the so-called ‘Woke Agenda’ isn’t ruining society;
- Other resistance includes: thousands have expressed solidarity with the undocumented as they protested against Tr_ mp’s war on immigrants after dramatic ICE raids; immigrants rights groups are playing a key role in resisting the coup; a major world neochristian church leader has written to US bishops to criticise Tr_ mp administration policies; AP News has refused to use Tr_ mp’s new name for the Gulf of Mexico - leading to a spiteful, press freedom encroaching, ban; military families at a US base in Europe have heckled the USA’s “secretary of defence”; China has made a public statement supporting Gaza and the Panama Canal; a sanctuary city for tarns, gender diverse and nonbinary people; Democrat state representatives have walked out on a rubbish speech; a US Army vet has filed a lawsuit against Tr_ mp; pushback from European leaders; Ukrainian President Zelensky has shut down an underhanded attempt by the USA to deceive/strong arm him into concessions at the security conference in Europe - see also this; a DOJ order to end a prosecution of alleged corruption charges has been rejected by some and seen other prosecutors resign in protest;
- Legal action includes: a court order temporarily blocking Tr_ mp and M_ sk’s associates from accessing the U.S. Treasury Department’s payment system - and requiring the destruction of data; a judge has blocked Tr_ mp’s order for US AID staff to be placed on leave; asylum seekers and immigrants in the USA have better access to their legal rights after a court temporarily lifted a stop-work order; the restoration of public health websites has been ordered; the Center for Constitutional Rights has also made legal challenges; ACLU challenges to sending people to Guantanamo Bay; this by US AID workers; not legal action, but a detailed analysis by a legal channel of the ridiculous “fork in the road” emails sent to US federal employees;
Regarding Tr_ mp this week, we have:
- Tr_ mp welcoming a white supremacist with black pilot phobia and a history of anti-Martin Luther King and anti-the 1964 Civil Rights Act activism - and China sycophant El _n M_ sk has rehired the sacked racist in his team; another despicable use of fake imagery by Tr_ mp; an opinion that Tr_ mp appears to now also be following the authoritarian playbook of Hungary’s Orbán (there is also a fair case for comparison to 1930s Germany); a Russian propagandist is now the USA’s Director of National Intelligence ... ; Tr_ mp has refused to accept responsibility for the damage he has done; the US Senate has just wilfully and deliberately attacked the world’s health system, with an intent to destroy ... - see also this; a US state has just banned local officials from voting against Tr_ mp’s deportation policies (e.g., by creating sanctuary cities) - which is having a chilling effect on that state’s elected representatives; the US military has confirmed it has written a blank cheque for deportations - which, as shown under the last Tr_ mp regime, is at least three times more expensive than a civilian approach - and that the military tries to hide the real costs;
- Tr_ mp and M_ sk have shut down enforcement of laws to stop international bribery, pardoned a convicted corrupt politician, and made a corrupt shut down of consumer protection - to M_ sk’s personal benefit ... and are unable to prove allegations of fraud (the behaviour of the press secretary is puerile - waving ordinary contracts around as if they are somehow “proof” of fraud. That sort of incompetence belongs on a grade 3 schoolyard); M_ sk’s social media platform will pay Tr_ mp US$10million to settle a lawsuit over Capitol attack that was begun under that now notorious platform’s former ownership;
- noting the South African oligarchs around Tr_ mp, US aid to South Africa has been frozen over allegations of land appropriation from white farmers - despite South Africa’s denials, and despite an outcry from health researchers and medical workers in the nation (which, globally, has the highest absolute number of people living with HIV); fears of a resurgence of violent extremism in Kurdish areas caused by cuts to US AID;
- while corruption in Mexico is a problem, Tr_ mp’s claim that Mexican cartels and government are allied is not reality and shows a lack of comprehension;
- loyalty tests during White House hiring procedures are becoming extreme (that exist at all is unacceptable); there is a growing list of Trump’s legally dubious firings, but, after a judge rules that the M_ sk-Tr_ mp regime can downsize the US federal government with worker buyouts, which is a legal victory for that regime after a series of courtroom setbacks, mass layoffs have started;
- Tr_ mp’s attack on press freedom are continuing;
- a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imported by the USA (see also here), with uncertainty about the increasingly erratic Tr_ mp’s position of tariffs on Australia (possibly because of a verbal commitment by our possibly most corrupt ever PM - if we don’t get an exemption, perhaps we should revisit the strategic silence on Tr_ mp’s human rights abuses, so we don’t look like a pack of clueless, flummoxed amathiacs from the 1960s floundering around the early 21st century???); the EU will respond firmly against any additional tariffs ... and Tr_ mp has threatened widespread revenge tariffs, admitting that they “could” increase prices;
- an examination of the intensified and widened war on science;
- pettiness/revenge including revoking Joe Biden’s security clearance;
Buyer’s regret this week includes: some CEOs; family farmers; more Tr_ mp voters; MAYBE SOME conservative US Senators ... and some other Republicans; a Tr_ mp appointed prosecutor has turned whistleblower;
Other resistance against the Mump regime includes: a consideration of how long the Tr_ mp-M_ sk bromance might last; a court order blocking transfers to Guantanamo Bay over unclear legal process;
Concerns about Tr_ mp’s mental state this week includes: this; documentation which is claimed to reveal that M_ sk has hypomania (was this obtained ethically? Presumably it has been released on the basis of public interest [and M_ sk’s behaviour is disturbing and of the gravest concern, but there are still privacy questions ... ); bizarre comments about US Treasury notes; this assessment of a Tr_ mp-M_ sk press conference, including the lies and the dynamics showing Tr_ mp’s powerlessness and Tr_ mp’s deterioration; this psychiatrist’s assessment;
This week the Israel-Palestine war/ceasefire has seen: firstly, as a comment (personal opinion), Tr_ mp seems to me to be behaving like a soulless, poison-hearted property developer with no understanding, let alone caring (and definitely no love) for the land that sustains us: to such people the land doesn’t matter at all, just the “sellability” of whatever has been done to it ... and that is the approach of colonisers/imperialists throughout history when destroying Indigenous cultures so that the colonisers/imperialists/soulless property developers can make money ... ; the Jewish Council of Australia issued a Press Release expressing deep concern about many of the recommendations released today by “overtly politicised” inquiries into antisemitism (which they acknowledge is of real concern) and strong opposition to the recommendation for universities to adopt a definition of antisemitism based on the controversial IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, which was never intended to be used as a tool to regulate free speech, and has been rejected by hundreds of scholars of antisemitism and Jewish studies (including its own author) and international human rights organisations as the examples of antisemitism it provides have been weaponised to suppress criticism of Israel and silence Palestinian voices; continuing prisoner/hostage exchanges and further Israeli withdrawals ahead of the next phase of ceasefire negotiations ... but H___s for a while was going to delay the next release, accusing Israel of breaking ceasefire conditions, leading to threats from Tr_ mp - who has also confirmed he won’t let any Palestinians back after his ethnic cleansing - this is continued here but H___s later agreed to continue the exchanges ... but Jordan and Egypt have refused to accept displaced Palestinians (and Saudi Arabia will not recognise Israel without a sovereign Palestine); and examples of Israeli settler violations and abuses of Palestinians in the West Bank.
In Australia, two nurses have - quite rightly, in my opinion - been condemned, stood down, and are being investigated by police for threatening to refuse to treat and threatening to kill Israeli patients.
On that, apart from the very clear and absolute human rights violations, as the Jewish Council of Australia has pointed out, Jews (and Israelis) are not a homogenous monolithic block, and many are opposed to what Israel is doing, and work with others on human rights for all (for instance, this and this). So, what if a person who could have been killed by these nurses was someone who had been helping - or someone who could change and help in the future, such as Yitzhak Rabin or Ariel Sharon (which is the sort of person who could have the greatest impact in effecting change)?
The sort of sentiment those nurses have expressed brings to mind the personal threats (including physical and sexual) I have received for being part of several minority groups, and historical scenes such as the bayoneting of people at the start of the Pakistani civil war that led to the formation of Bangladesh, the terrified young Israeli woman who was killed by Palestinian airline hijackers (also in the 1970s), and the death of a Palestinian father and son - the latter three covered by video imagery (which I will NOT link to), and several of the stages of genocide. The point of knowing about atrocities is to stop them - not perpetrate them in revenge!
That can be difficult (I have also had a neice who was murdered, a friend who is the ongoing victim of a stalker, and several friends and acquaintances who were victims of domestic violence - and live with what is being done to the minority groups I belong to, so I have some personal experience on that [and have written about that on my blog]), but it is important to get the help to at least stop reacting, if you can.
As the great Martin Luther King Jr. so eloquently expressed these key concepts:
“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral. Returning violence with violence only multiplies violence, add deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.”
On a perhaps more personal level, I also appreciate “Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity” and “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
However, also note “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”, which means the hate and violence must NOT simply to be tolerated or accepted, it must be opposed with every fibre of our being - for the sakes of the direct victims and victim-survivors, bystanders, perpetrators, and all of humanity. It is not acceptable to create arbitrary sorting lines and pick and choose which group does or doesn’t receive their full entitlement to human rights and dignity for simply existing - which is one of the many mistakes those nurses made.
Australia’s neoliberal opposition leader has used this as a pretext to promote xenophobia - although a referendum would be needed. On a more positive note, note that the nurses making the threats do NOT represent or speak on behalf of other nurses.
In other international news: Iran has stopped any prospect of nuclear talks with a Tr_ mp White House; a The Guardian exclusive reports that Ukrainian President Zelensky is trying to get US companies on side as Europe cannot guarantee Ukraine’s security without the USA - and Ukraine might consider a land swap ... but Russia won’t; a summit of African leaders from the eight-nation East African Community and 16-member Southern African Development Community to address the crisis has directed army chiefs to meet within five days and “provide technical direction on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire”, including an opening of humanitarian corridors to evacuate the dead and injured; after years of planning and preparation, the Baltic nations have switched from Russian to EU power; the USA has slid from 24th place to 28th on Transparency International’s annual corruption index, 2 places lower than Mexico (my nation is in 10th place, which is better, but we still have a long way to go with a score of 77 out of 100) - and many nations have had their worst scores in over a decade (South Sudan is worst); and Sudan will give Russia a base on the Read Sea.
Meanwhile, initially unconfirmed claims by Tr_ mp that he spoke to Putin about an non-specific way to end the Ukraine war led to discussions where the USA’s “secretary of defence” said Ukraine would have to cede territory - thereby giving Putin a win and encouraging every other tinpot dictator who wanted to grab other nation’s lands ... see also this excellent analysis, and this comprehensive analysis by a military expert. In fact, this proposal has left Putin “buoyant” that momentum has shifted his way, and Russian state television is celebrating and “mercilessly” mocking Tr_ mp for his obedience. Disturbingly, the talks on ending Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine may not include Ukraine! Germany has criticised the USA’s concessions to Russia and approach to ending Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine - see also this assessment of what Ukraine might have to give up.

H_t l_r denied the legitimacy of the Czechoslovak state ... a counterfactual ... we cannot say in detail what might have been. Had Czechoslovakia resisted, however, we can be reasonably confident that there would have been no Second World War, at least not of the sort that Europe experienced beginning in September 1939” This is possibly the most consequential comment of this entire week
In human rights news: the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention has issued its second Red Flag alert for the Mump Regime in the USA, being a warning of the transgenocidal nature of Tr_ mp*s policies/Executive Orders against trans, gender diverse, and non binary people; a warning that Sudan is currently the scene of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis - and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect has just issued an urgent alert on the risk of genocide in North Darfur; a rental affordability crisis for retirees in Australia; grossly unsanitary, inhumane, and abusive conditions in NT watch houses - where the Treaty process has been ended; Google - which started under a now well and truly dead slogan of do no evil - has surrendered to Tr_ mp’s hate campaigns and removed DEI; the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is trying to extricate itself from the hole of racism that it created and dived into - with continuing, disturbing revelations (notably around double standards); a warning that proposed anti-protest laws in NSW would stifle peaceful dissent - including outside Sydney Town Hall; the utter absurdity - and danger - of the USA’s gun laws have been shown by a blind man being issued a concealed carry permit - which he sought to make this point; an Afghan asylum seeker has committed a mass atrocity car attack in Germany - which is likely to inflame xenophobia prior to the coming elections; revelations about Bangladesh’s brutal repression of recent protests; seven people in NSW have been arrested over an alleged sexual abuse ‘claim farming’ scheme that police say netted more than A$1 billion, but NSW police have emphasised they support legitimate victims, and want a system that is less ”porous”; as an opinion piece points out that “as any woman in the back of a locked taxi knows, Sam Kerr should never have been brought to court” and another incident shows women’s football (soccer) needs to protect its players - including against transphobic abuse; an update on a petition seeking action against CSA and aid for survivor-victims includes a telling comment from a neoliberal MP which seems to try to to reduce the issue to an immediate cost-benefit analysis - and that is the problem with all politicians who are heartless or materialistic or lacking in human understanding, IMO; and Myanmar/Burmese deportees from Thailand have been forced to join the junta’s military - which is a war (in Myanmar/Burma) and human rights (in Thailand) crime.
Also in Australia, a survivor of an assault while she was running wants to help women and gender-diverse people “take back the track”, a call to do better for victims of r_ pe/s_ x__l assault (with the examples of one who is afraid to leave home alone [I have a variation of that] and another who wishes she’d never reported her rape), and there have been demonstrations in support of trans kids in Qld - including powerful criticisms from parents of trans kids as a retiring MP criticises transphobes, and we are now hearing the experience of the trans kids themselves, and a majority of coalition Senators show they are on the side of hate and cruelty. Recently an NHMRC review was announced, but the problem with that is, based on past reviews, it is far too likely to ignore the effects of discrimination and the risks of suicide if nothing is done - see commentary here.
In societal and governance matters: a critique and criticism of national opposition leader Dutton’s attempts to distract the government and voters from his detail-free plans - and of the discrepancy between his hinted at commitments on women’s health and his actual historical performance; and both the US and the UK have said no to inclusive AI ... .
From a spiritual perspective: the lack of human understanding, lack of humanity, and inhumanity of those who are committing, enabling, or failing to resist the major atrocities actively occurring this week (particularly in Sudan and eastern DRC, the proposed ethnic cleansing of Gaza, the attack on the right to a decent existence by greedy, arrogant oligarchs & christo-fascist takeover & threat to the rule of law in the USA, and Ukraine’s defence of democracy in particular) is very apparent. This is a failing of those people, AND the systems that created/enabled them (I am particularly concerned about schools - and any teachers who fail to understand the broader context of what they are doing): both need to be addressed by those doing the work of this blog (or other nonviolent activism), as well as reversing/undoing the harm, healing the world, and doing anything else to make sure none of this ever happens again. There has also been secondary hate, including in my nation, by people who are perhaps frustrated but also lacking in perspective and understanding - they, and their acts of act and the harm they have caused (including to the cause they claim to be acting for) must also be addressed.
